Mercruiser 5.0 I/O
My 2007 Sea Ray Sundancer 240 maxes out at 35 mph; however, it takes about a minute for it to start accelerating even with throttle all the way down. So the boat will cruise at 5-10 mph and then eventually speed up and pretty quickly even though I haven’t touched the throttle for about a minute. Is this normal?

What is the rpm at wide open throttle once it is on plane and at full speed?
Are you a new boater, and if so, do you know how to use the drive trim to trim the drive in on take off and then only trim out once it is on plane?

yes. New. Don’t know rpm off hand. No, don’t know about trimming. Just assumed I want Drive all the way down if the water is deep enough.

OK, yes you do want to trim in/down full on startup and then only trim out once you are on plane.

The reason I asked about the prop is to ensure that at WOT you are getting to the proper RPM. If you are not, your boat may not have the proper prop. It may have too much pitch (measured in inches). So next time you use it, run it at wide open throttle and let us know the RPM and speed. If you don’t get to the recommended RPM for your 5.0l engine, that will give you one potential cause. It should get to 4400 to 4800 rpm at WOT. If it is lower, that could mean you are “overpropped” or maybe the engine is not running right. If it goes way over that, it’s under propped or a spun hub on the prop or failed coupler on the drive/engine connection.

As an added point, you dont typically run your boat at WOT. You do it once in awhile, for a short period of time (minutes) to validate what the boat can do, ensuring that it meets specs, as a troubleshooting step.

I’m a little confused on your description.
Do you mean you push the throttle all the way forward, then the boat engine makes no reaction for about a minute, then suddenly revs up?
Do you push the throttle, the engine revs up to high (3000+ rpm), but the boat just sluggishly pushes through the water for about a minute?
