We attended the Annual New York Boat Show at the Javits Center on the west side of Manhattan. It was a standard affair, but this year there was very poor attendance. No surprise here owing to the financial duress world wide. Once again the old adage, "Cash is King" holds true. A boat is a great place to lose our troubles if only for a few hours or days. Marinas will also be feeling the Pinch and trailer-able boats will be the way to go. I'll continue to boat and adjust my financials to allow this. How about you? Happy New Year to everyone and may God grant you Serenity and Health. Al W.

The annual Nashville Boat Show will run 07-11 January, and I'll be there helping to man our Power Squadron's booth. I'll report back in a couple of on attendance and the word from various exhibitors there. The promotors (NMMA Boat Shows) are urging exhibitors to emphasize a "green theme" this year.

I agree with you, Al, that serious boaters will continue to boat, and will find ways to adjust their lives to make it happen. We are living in interesting times, in the definition of the old Chinese curse.

I will be at the Cleveland, Ohio show Jan. 17 and will report back.

The NYC show closed a week ago. No wonder that you noticed that it was slow!

There Ya go again Frank!! Sarcasm as an Art. You should write a book, "Sarcasm for Dummies!". Al W.:smt038

I don't care for the "Dummy" series, but I'll send you an autographed copy if I do write it.

Best regards,
Frank

We attended the NYC show last Sunday (before it closed, Frank). Attendance indeed was down. I would imagine the contibutors, in this order, were the economy, the dates of the show (the 2 weeks before Christmas, not after like previous years) and the crappy weather. We went looking for a new dinghy and at least to get a price on a new 48DA. We were unimpressed with the deals on either, however, the deal on the 48 was probably muted somewhat as we have a trade to deal with. We'll probably get to the Miami show and maybe one other before we cut off the shrink wrap. Once that happens and IF fuel prices stay where they are we plan on taking some LONG cruises this summer.

Im going to assume that the Detroit boat show is going to be empty as well. However I saw a commercial the other day and it looks like there's alot to do there this year. i guess we'll see in feb.

I and a few friends are finalizing plans tomorrow to attend the Miami Show.
As I wrote in another post, Sea Ray has already informed me that they will not be having a cocktail party this year.
Talking to the couple that is going with us and have a Tiara, he has been told Tiara will be low key at this event also.

Newspapers here in Chicago are promoting the heck out of the Chicago Boat Show on Jan 16-18.
We will see how that one goes.

I hear that Bagga-Goya-Beans is selling tickets....

I'm hoping to get to the Atlantic City Boat at the Convention Center in February. I'll be in Florida that whole week scuba diving, so it will depend if I can get home in time for the last day of the show on Sunday. We usually go with two or three couples and make a day of it in AC. Ron's going to be there making reservations for the "T" with Farleys...

The annual Nashville Boat Show will run 07-11 January. The promotors (NMMA Boat Shows) are urging exhibitors to emphasize a "green theme" this year.

""GREEN" Product Promotion
Eco-friendly boats, engines, accessories and lifestyle products are key points of interest for the media right now and also top of mind for the consumer. Environmental awareness within the recreational boating industry is a top message at this year's show, and we want to bring these exciting new green products to the forefront of our media outreach."

and affordability:

"The 23rd Nashville Boat & Sportshow is looking to new and innovative ways to reach the media and attract buyers, and is rolling out two new features: the Affordability Pavilion and "Green" Product Promotion. The new features are FREE of charge to any exhibitor – all we need is your participation!!!

Here are the specifics for the Affordability Pavilion:
If you have a green product or a boat that can be financed for $250 or less per month and would like to participate in these FREE features, please contact...."

Regarding the Detroit Show...the local dealer just gave me a call and stated that they have free tickets to the show, but you have to go into the dealership to pick them up...:smt038.... what the heck, nothing like smelling fiberglass in December...

Sue and I are going. Don't know what date yet...

I'm going, but it looks like it may have to be on the weekend. I just got a notice I have been selected for the Grand Jury starting Jan 12th. Not sure how long it will last I've never been called for Grand Jury duty before???

I'll be at the Atlanta show on friday and Saturday. Me and a few buddies of mine like to go and consume alot cocktails and check everything out.

Won't make the Miami show this year - business is toooo bad for the expense.

The Detroit show should be interesting, as the "big three" auto companies drive Michigan boating industry to a large extent.

Of the dealers that I know are attending, all are indicating smaller commitments and reduced expectations, but I agree with the above that the true boaters will find a way and continue on. This will most likely be the basis for supporting the industry for the next 12 to 18 months, as it will be very difficult to attract new boaters to a luxury hobby that has the potential to be very costly.

I will be going to the Atlantic City show in Feb. Will post after the show. Hoping by then that there will be more wheeling and dealing going on.

Sorry for the thread creep - Sue is finishing up her 60 day Cobb County Grand Jury duty. Each county may be different, but they met every Thursday - did 60-70 cases each day. And saying you own a gun, and listen to Boortz/Limbaugh won't get you out of it!
