Boat shopping and survey woes

Sure. And not to hijack, but if you don't think $5.00 plus fuel and crazy a$$ inflation aren't taking a bite out of most people you're nuts. The last time gas was $5.00 in 2008 boating tanked and my marina has never recovered. And we had no inflation back then. I stopped at Walmart the other day -- no eggs, none, nada, zippo. Wheat, the staple of just about everything we eat is up 25%. This doesn't end good, imo.

I heard there was an avian flu outbreak and farmers were actually killing off herds (are they called herds?) of chickens to stop the spread. No chickens, less eggs. It’s not inflation, Ukraine or some political party’s antics. It’s avian flu.

It doesn’t matter. No eggs, no chicken, no food. And less supply creates inflation.

True. Perhaps I misread your post. I interpreted you as saying there were no eggs because of inflation, not that no eggs contributed to inflation.

Actually the bigger message is everything is fk up right now. And I think we are headed into a world of hurt. In my lifetime, there have never been shortages of food.

Just wait until the Shanghai lockdown effects hit here...

Walmart and Harbor Freight will be empty!:eek::eek:

In all seriousness, the effect is already being felt. I am in the electronics industry and a number of my suppliers cannot get products manufactured there right now (so they can't ship product). You can't even schedule shipments of materials INTO Shanhai, because the carriers are not allowed to move. So nothing is moving in, through, or out. End users/customers of products made there have already been dealing with long lead times; now they are that much worse.

I love reading about stuff on CSM, but a rookie when it comes to posting. Not Sure if this is the right spot to post, but here goes.

Looking at purchasing a bigger boat so I have been looking, came across a 2003 Sea Ray 260 that appears to have been (my opinion) painted below the rub rail? Has anyone ever seen this? I didn't think this was an option when new for 2003? So obvious questions are why was it painted? It looks nice but the evidence of some orange peeling makes me feel like it was painted.

Also never had a boat survey before so is the offer price negotiated subject to the survey? Then potentially renegotiated after the survey and viewing of all boat maintenance records?

You'll want to either start your own thread or potentially pop over to the sport cruiser section (linked below) to find the 260 specific thread. And yes, for sure, most any offer for a boat would be contingent on a survey and a sea trail. Though these days boats are hard to come by and people are making crazy offers...

Thanks for the input on the sport cruiser section. If I make an offer it will definitely subject to a survey and sea trial.

Just be aware some sellers aren't allowing survey/sea trial contingencies. I have had two sellers balk at full ask offers because I wanted one. Boat sold anyway, as there are suckers born every minute.

And those boats can be sold to someone else. There are far too many things to examine with a boat purchase to go without a survey in a sea trail. I mean, who buys a used car without a test drive? And boats are typically far more expensive than cars. I don’t care what the markets doing, if a seller doesn’t want to accept survey and sea trial contingencies, he has something to hide. Find another boat.

Yes I agree with all comments I would for sure get a survey and do a sea trial, funny I will have to make another call to the broker to see if I can get some of my questions answered I guess the boat broker isn't in a hurry to call me back.

Agreed 1000%, but easier said than done in this market. :)

Adding insult to injury here on my progress. Waiting for the abstract of title from the USCG which should take 1-2 days. Was told it'll be here at the latest by Tuesday AM. Here we are Wednesday afternoon and apparently no progress at all and there are 6 other requests that were made last Friday which haven't been completed yet either.

Thought I'd get the boat on Thursday with Saturday as a back up plan. My new attitude is F it. Whenever the boat shows up it shows up. Been chasing this damn boat since October and I'm tired. There is no way in hell this is happening anytime soon.

Bless your patience. I would have quit long ago.

I tried one like it and it didn’t find anything that I didn’t find with my own searches. The only record that existed was an old uscg registry that I had already found on the uscg site. Unlike cars, I don’t get the feeling that marine service records are tracked like cars seem to be.
A boat I was under contract to purchase last year, I ran a boat history on it and a fire showed up. The selling broker tried to downplay it. I was able to get more details from the boat history place, enough where I walked away from the purchase.
