Forgive me if this has been covered recently. I only found dated threads. I have researched several systems online.

I am looking for a security system primarily for use at the dock, at home. I may build it myself from home systems.

I may obtain cell service with internet for the boat.

Desires:

1) Loud alarm with motion detectors.
2) On board camera that I can see on phone.
3) GPS tracking?

I can install a cell system and a router, but what about battery back up? Small inverter?
I can get battery powered cameras with wifi.
I could install an inexpensive security system with key pad and notification.

I really don't want to spend thousands on a boat security system and monitoring service.

Is that boat specific or a general system? May be a good way to go.

I have the Siren Marine products installed foe security and gps tracking as I live 1200 miles from my boat. It does everything you list except the video. I am still researching products to fit my needs for that area of security.

i was on a boat last year that had a regular alarm system. i guess like a home system? (it was at a marina we were thinking of going to and i commented how big it was (about 45') and we were invited in). they said it was broken into the year before so they had an alarm system installed

Hampton, I looked into a similar system last year. There's a company here called simplisafe it's a home security system that runs on 3G, and wireless . I had emailed them asking about running the system on a boat they said absolutely and I could have a seasonal contract. Here's the link:http://simplisafe.com/home-security-2. Keep us in the loop.

Our boat was broken into a couple of years ago. At that time I looked at a number of systems. The Siren Marine solution seemed to be very popular here. I also looked at the GOST systems. Those are pricy, but all of the sensor devices are wireless making installation much simpler.

I think the GOST technology would completely fit Hampton's requirements, other than cost and on going monitoring service fees.

my D-link cloud based camera works very well....it has full pan and tilt range of motion and has motion and sound detection.......it sends me an e-mail when motion is detected....it will make a short recording when motion is detected and stores it on a SD card....i can access and control the live camera and stored video clips from my phone or computer...it also has two way communication....I even use it to monitor temperature sensors throughout the boat (cabin, cockpit, engine room)...I have a display that shows all of the temps and use my camera to look at the display...

Is there a sensitivity setting for the motion detector? Seems a windy day would trigger several false warnings.

yes you can set the sensitivity of the motion detection as well as the size of the field it monitors.....both of these features help minimize false alerts......

it can also be mounted upside down due to its 'reverse image' feature.....I have mine hanging upside down on the radar arch.....

John,

Don't overlook your local security system vendors, specifically the one you have for your home, Knowing your circumstances, a system like I use on my shop in Tennessee may work well and inexpensively.

My shop is about 100 ft from the nearest part of my home that is alarmed. The alarm vendor set up a wireless connection from the shop to the main system in the house. The shop system is wired because the exposure is mostly big doors that are easy to wire with 2 areas that have motion detectors in them. When the shop is triggered, the signal goes to the wireless loop and is transmitted to the alarm system in the house. There are total of 3- 120db horns/sirens, one in the shop, that go off when any alarm sensors is triggered. My alarm system alerts by zone when a sensor is tripped so the 911 system knows who to dispatch (police, sheriff, fire, etc.) and they know where to start looking when they get here.

In my world, I am trying to avoid multiple systems....each has a cost and its own overhead in terms of time to manage it. This is one way to avoid a separate system and a cellular dialer (another cell account) but get the same overall protection, even though it is just a basic approach.

Hope you guys are doing well.............

John, since the boat is at your home, why not just install cameras and DVR that you can monitor over wifi and just install door sensors with audible alarms? If they get in you'll have video. If someone gets in they'll be gone before the sheriff shows up anyway so hoping the audible alarm scares them away you'll still have video of them. Here's a few shots of my cameras I can view anywhere. I record 24 hrs a day for about 8 days on a loop. I also have them shown on the salon tv and a seperate small monitor on the bridge so I can view everything inc engines while underway.
