I have a deposit on my boat but as part of the contingency for the sale to go through the buyer wants to pay a captain to run my boat 10hrs so he can get oil samples. Anyone heard of this? It seems ridiculous to me. Boat is in the northeast so it has brand new oil since it’s wrapped on the hard.

I am a broker. I would say NO. You never know what can go wrong. Boat is probably in great shape, but things break. Who's responsible? Try to come up with an agreeable amount to hold in escrow. Close the sale, let them do samples when they are ready. Samples come back good you get the amount held in escrow, or visa vesa.

I wouldn't do that either. I think I'd tell them if I still have the boat I'd let them know when I've added at least 10hrs running time.

I'd make no deal, even like Bahamabreisus suggest...10hrs is a long time 'You never know what can go wrong'.

If the oil has already been changed what info would they get from the samples?

Without a history, what value would oil samples be anyway? I would stick with survey and sea trial. It's the downside of buying in the winter where boats are laid up.

I agree with this. 10 hours of run time would not provide accurate samples, especially if the buyer is hinging the purchase on said samples. Also, without having a running oil sample history it would be difficult to conclude engine health after just one sample. As a buyer, if I made it to this point of the process, I would be more focused on maintenance records that back up a good survey, along with a reputable Cummins tech to perform a thorough engine inspection. Even with the most comprehensive inspections and due diligence, you could still have a catastrophic failure ten miles into your first cruise as the new owner. For the reasons just mentioned and for the multitude of other factors I feel the request is absurd and would not agree.

Based on my insurance I do not think I could lend someone our boat for 10 hour. You could offer them a 10 hour trip with you if they paid for the fuel. We have run longer than 10 hours in a day and it a very long day.

That's absolutely ridiculous for all the reasons already stated and probably a couple more.

Surprised no one else made this observation, but it sounds like a Nigerian Scam in the physical rather than in cyberspace. Don't know where it's docked, but how far could he go in ten hours?

I wouldn't even rent it to him . . . other than for one hour,
after the funds cleared for the deposit equal to the agreed selling price.
