Since we're moving from trailering our cruiser, to a bigger slipped one, nows a good time to get rid of the plastic plates/bowls we've been using.

Are run of the mill porcelain plates ok? Seems to me if you hit some rough water you may end up with a galley full of broken dishes....

We still use paper plates and plastic forks, knives and spoons. We still use the boat as a get away. The misses does not want to do dishes when we are trying to get away from it all.

The admiral uses Melamine dinnerware on our boat, and it gets a lot of use, and She likes it.

We still like plastic pieces so we can throw them away. Who wants to wash dishes with all the other stuff that needs to be done on a boat.

We use a combination of Melamine and disposable. We got our Melamine dishes from Target as they seem to have a variety of fun colors this time of year. They are also much lighter than porcelain so less fuel to float them. We use both to minimize washing but still wanted a "real" plate for nicer meals and to add color to the table. If you want a light weight, durable (still breakable but not as fragile), "real" dishes, look at Corelle dishes at most big box stores. Here are three that might look cool on your boat, two in blue trim and one with nauticaly contrasting red.

I use both too, but mostly plastics........If I have someone on the boat I will use the acrylic/melamine plates and real knives, forks and spoons....All else I will use nice plastic.....I do not want to feel like I am camping.....I will always use nice melamine wine glasses...

I must confess...LOL
I love the Target Melamine and have been going back and forth about buying it. I really don't want the hassle of washing dishes in a teeny sink, but then again, I love the idea of nice dishes for company, but then again...ugh!

We have a set of plastic plates we got from West and polycarbonite 'glassware'. We also use a stack of paper plates for preparation and serving. Even a raft up on a Saturday can generate a painful amount of trash.

Melamine mostly but paper on simple quick snacks. Another note, when we grill on the boat I make sure to use foil pans when transferring the food on and off grill. They stack easy and are throwaway.

Funny, when we are boating i do all the cooking washing, waxing cleaning dishes... and i don't mind it a bit since I do very little when home i guess

We still use plastic and wash them, Mike.

We use the glass plates because you are not sopposed to put the melamine in the microwave.. WE had (have the nice "boat" dishes with the no slip plastic rubber things on the bottom but hey are not microwave approved) we have the same trash issue so with just the two of us we wash some dishes over the weekend. no big deal.

After some responses and looking, thinking we are leaning towards Corelle.

Melamine from Target with real flatware. I hate plastic forks.

I agree. We purchased plastic plates, bowls, and acrylic cups. We even got stemless acrylic wine glasses. While not microwave safe, they are nice. We use real flatware. I think we picked it up at Ikea if I recall.

Target sells a good variety of stuff and it's not expensive.

You mean to say y'all don't eat like this every time you're on your boats????

Just kidding. We set the table like that only when we're doing a dinner cruise we've donated to a charity auction (we do a few a year). Other than that it's usually paper plates and plastic silverware.
