This past holiday weekend, one of the local racetracks had a quite entertaining, yet somewhat sad boat race. It was quite entertaining in the fact that the object of the race was to tow a boat behind a race car and run on a figure 8 track. The boats were chained or strapped with what appeared to be 6-8 ft behind the car. There were 4 car/boat combinations in the race. The boats were basically drug behind the cars and I'm guessing the winner was the one car that had any remnant of a boat still attached behind the car. After two laps around the figure 8 one car lost its boat and it turned into a smash the boat-a-thon by the car that lost its boat. After about 10 laps it was over. Great fun with great laughs. Unfortunately there are now two classic Sea Rays that will never have the chance to be saved. Looking from out seats in the stands, my wife and I were guessing mid seventies SRV's- one closed bow like ours and one open bow. My wife looked at me and when she saw the look on my face and in my eyes, she said "don't worry sweetheart, ours is safe at home in the driveway" LOL. As we watched the race, she comments that the folks who prepped the boats could have at least taken the teak gaff rails off the bow and sold them to us so we have a spare set. Gotta love her take on things like that. Anyway, it was good fun and if you have a chance to see something along the lines of a boat race, check it out, good, clean, family fun.

I can imagine that would be sad to watch, and fun at the same time. Over here on the east side of the state they hold Combine Demolition Derbies. Kind of fun to watch those behemoths run into each other until the last one is running.

What is it about us that we like to watch things like that?

I've actually seen this on TV some time ago.

Combine demo derby? That would be fun to watch! I don't know what it is about us getting enjoyment out of watching something get smashed up. Perhaps it has something to do with the primal instinct to beat on something without getting flak for it? LOL. Evergreen Speedway, in Monroe had the boat races. Friday night the 4th along with the boat racing was a car demo derby and a stunt by "Mr Dizzy" - a fellow from the area that has been on TV. He drove an old Buick Estate wagon up some ramps, thru an old wooden shed and landed on a couple cars. We go twice a year for the special events that the speedway puts on. In September, they will have some fun racing to watch- a "train" race where two cars are hooked together with a length of log chain and they race the figure 8. The catch to it is the front car is the "gas" and the rear car is the "brakes". After the train race there is a pick-up truck demo derby and fireworks at the end. The track is an asphalt track- 5/8 mile on the outer track, 3/8 on the inner with the figure 8 marked out on the inner track. Evergreen is a very nice track, although I have to admit that I'm more of a dirt track fan-love to watch the sprint cars go at it. Something about a car weighing 1500lbs, with a 600hp engine and smelling the alcohol exhaust fumes.
