Hey guys, Any recommendations for artists in/around Annapolis that can help take an old name off a boat and put a new one on?

I recommend Linda Gillis at Custom Lettering in Stevensville, MD. She doesn't really have a webpage, but I believe she has an online photo gallery that you can look at to see her previous projects. Linda's been doing boat lettering since the '80s, using vinyl lettering or the old fashioned hand painted letters. Her phone is 410-643-1779.

After getting quotes from two different places that were both in the $500 range for a fairly simple layout and work that did not require any lettering removal, I ended up doing it myself. You mention "artist" so if you're looking for painted artwork than I can offer no help. But if you're looking for vinyl lettering I can tell you it's not that difficult and you can get some pretty nice designs done for a lot less money. I think I spent about $100 for the name and home port lettering from BoatUS.

I just got mine done at a sign place called signquick. But taking off the old can be involved. To do it right you will need to remove the letters and probably wet sand and polish the transom. Then apply the new letters and wax.

Don't forget the all important naming / re-naming ceremony.

Indeed... the most important step!

As to the wet sand/polish you are correct. And depending on the existing conditions this could be daunting. Although, I doubt the sign company would do that anyway so it's an added step for the owner regardless.

Take it off yourself with a heat gun and scraper. And I second BoatUS for custom graphics. Mine was about $75 for the custom art. Maybe $60 more for the boat name.

We took the previous name off our boat using a plastic scraper and a hair dryer. We followed up with Goo Gone to remove the remainder of the residue and it worked perfectly. If the previous name was not vinyl lettering, you might need to hire someone.

We used Prism Graphics in Seattle and they did offer to have us put the graphics on ourselves but we opted for them to do it. Another option for you - http://www.prismgraphics.com/

Getting the name off is a fairly simple task if its old vinyl lettering. The issue becomes the nice bright gel coat you have left behind and even in some cases the raised area due to not getting worn down from repeated polishings. This is where you'll need to do a really good job buffing and/or wet sanding to make it as "clean" as possible. Otherwise you'll end up seeing the old name and graphics as "ghost images" I opted not to go the wet sand route, but did do a pretty extensive compounding job. It came out pretty good. I can still see the old images, but its gotta be at the perfect angle and in the perfect lighting condition, otherwise you can't tell.
