I think that is what you call them? For flushing it out after salt use or other wear use..

I looked at the outboard part and I understand you hook the hose into these muffs but I couldn't figure out where the heck they are suppose to go..

Anyone have any close up pictures or a how to around?

Thanks.

Not a picture, but they should cover the water intake holes on your out drive. Also make sure you have the water turned on before you start the engine and make sure the out drive is lowered.

The holes are right under the cavitation plate. If you have the Mercury muffs, the wire gets stuck through the holes and you sandwich the two sides together. Make sure you have the water turned up. Some people say you can have too much pressure but that only applies to smaller outboards. Your stern drive can take whatever comes through your garden hose. The water should come out of the exhaust no more than warm. Remember to keep your outdrive full down. (You should store it that way too)

Happy Boating.

Where and what do these intake holes look like? And what is a cavitation plate?

haha

There are about 10 of them, the size of a pencil, maybe a bit smaller. They are all in a vertical line. Above the round part that the prop is attached to, but below the cavitation plate

The cavitation plate is the flat part of the drive above where the prop spins, it keeps air from getting in front of the prop and allowing it to cavitate. That is when the air lets the prop spin freely in the cavity of air and your engine revs too high, and it's hard on the prop, and you can't go very well when it cavitates.

When using the muffs, lower the drive, and put the muffs on so they cover the holes on both sides. The wire should be in front of the drive, so you have to sneak the muffs between the boat and the outdrive. Then turn the hose on so water is spraying out, about half throttle on the hose. Then run the engine.
