I’ve always thought that recreational boating and the industry were kind of a North American thing. As we know the industry in the States, Searay in particular, has had issues. What is surprising, are the number of offshore manufacturers coming into home turf:
Azimut. Italy
President Taiwan
Aquila Powercats. China
Vicem. Turkey
Palm Beach Yachts Malaysia
Riviera. Australia
Selene trawlers. Malaysia/China
Prestige. Italy
Galleon Poland

Caveat Emptor....

North American boat building, like car manufacturing, shifted away from taking strategic direction from the engineering staff and listening to customers to rule by the bean counters. Both industries have suffered. Companies like Riviera and Azimut seem to operate with their ears open to design, engineering and customer feedback. They are successful, as a result.

Huh? "strategic direction" from engineering? Hah. Put three engineers in a room and see how much strategic direction you get after 4 hours of technical debate :)

I've been in the construction industry for 45 years but rarely had problems with the engineering staff or consultants. You may be thinking of architects...

Engineers that develop the ability to provide strategic direction and/or display an engaged leadership style have been freed from the bondage of the typical engineering mindset.

I know nothing of architects...
