I just bought a used 7000# hydraulic boat lift. Presently it has the plug in for AC power. I could use that setup if I keep the boat/lift at my father's place about 6 miles away. But I'd like to have the option of keeping it in front of my house, which is 1000' back from the water and there is no power to the shoreline.

What would it take to set up a solar charger/battery bank and power the hydraulic motor with DC?

Yeah,

At the least you will need a new motor(s), batteries, solar panel and voltage regulator.

As for the theft worry, you can get someone to build you a metal dock box that can be permanently attached to the dock. Its not like the thing runs constantly, a couple of minutes to launch and a couple at the end of the day, so heat build up is minimal. And you get a back up gen for the off season.

An inverter is designed for a capacitive load, like a TV or computer.

The motor is an inductive load, electrically opposite. It is also a large load.

An inverter and batteries isn't a good solution.

That's what a friend of mine has done. It's worked well for him for several years now.
