I gotta 1989 180 Sport with a 4.3 Chevy and it will run good for a while and jump right out of the water and two minutes later it will knock and run odd at wide open like its lean on gas it sucks that we have to work on the boat more than we run it we cleaned the carbs put all new filters on it a water separating fuel filter and the thing proceeds to run like crap anyone know what this could be maybe a shot fuel pump but sometimes it runs good at speed
Thanks Paul

MY guess would be the fuel pump. I had a Chevy Tahoe about as old as your boat once I know it's not a boat but it had the same syptoms. Sometimes it would run fine but sometimes it would want to stall, ended up being the fuel pump.

I had a similar problem with my 3.0. The problem started right after a complete tune-up. I went round and round with the fuel, filters, and separators. I was about to dive into the distributor but swapped the plugs again on a whim (cheaper than a module and coil). Problem solved!

You need to do a couple of things:
  • Ensure there is only one fuel filter between the fuel tank and the fuel pump.
  • Check the fuel pressure at the carburetor inlet.
  • Check that the anti-syphon valve on the fuel tank is not clogged.
  • Use some periods and capital letters in your writing.

Best regards,
Frank
