Boat Hits Concrete, Sinks in NY - 4 Die, 2 Hurt - NYTimes.com

What a shame......I bet that structure was not marked. I'm glad that for the most part I only run in sandy water and risk grounding rather than rocks or concrete structures. My condolences to the families.

This was from my neck of the woods. Less than 5 miles away. It is VERY typical for boaters (whom I am familar with) in this part of the hudson river to "bar hop" and drive the boat after drinking. The police dont patrol the water after dark and its easy to drink & drive and get away with it... . What a waste of lives.... These people were no spring chickens either... one person was 41, the others in their 20's....

FWIW, there are concrete, wood, steel obstructions all over the river since this part of NY was very industrial and has sunken barges everywhere.

When I read it there were no toxicology reports as far as I saw. I'm not saying they were sober but, I also am not condemning them without any solid info either. I mean we are not talking about Casey Anthony here!
People do stupid things all the time, it is just unfortunate when they have to pay with their lives.

The Hudson has all kinds of crap in it, something like this can happen to anyone in those waters. I can't tell you how many times I've almost hit some part of a decaying structure. If you dinghy around the shores you'll see even more stuff just under the water and none of it is marked.

Speed Kills.....If this boat was doing 10 mph I doubt anyone would have died. You mix drinking, speed and dark....=death
