Boat explosion Tampa Florida

I know at the end of the day it's all about money. It's a lot like when they went to injection on gassers over carbeurators. They have had that technology since the fiftys and only did they go to this in the early ninetys as I remember. Talk about a huge safety leap.
The pictures I saw of that boat that blew up made me sick. The kids were watching TV inside and how they got out is a miracle. They said the skipper was very meticulous about the care of his boat. Just goes to show you can't be too careful.

It has never ceased to amaze me why there are still boats being manufactured with gas engines. There are very reliable smaller diesel engines that would work in all kinds of different applications. No longer would you have to worry about gas fumes. Diesel doesn't make it fail safe but i'm about 99% sure my boat won't blow up.

I'll put a diesel in mine, you pay for it?

We still don't know about the generator. We had a long thread going here and that got locked, but here it all MAY be prover correct. Does a 33ft. SEA RAY come with a maranized Generator?

As for the gas fume sniffers, may be a good idae but as for another law. I normally feel a new law is NOT what we need, and I still hold firm here. Laws of averages have us coming home safely. Sad as this is I suggest we not be like politicians with there knee-jerk reactions to a disaster and hurt us all.

Wait and see, the answers will be there for us to read. I'll bet there were more then a few causes of this accident. They just added up quickly.

Until they stop gouging such a price premium for the diesels (in the US market anyway) it's not going to change. That and diesels don't provide the same instant off the line power of a typical gas setup. Sure, for everything other than towing sports this doesn't matter, and diesels are often a fine solution. But when they tell you it'll be at least $20k extra, PER ENGINE, buyers chose otherwise. Given the payback cycle it just doesn't make economic sense. But I'm with you on the safety argument.

Are you saying you would buy a 480 or some other large cruiser or bridge boat with gas engines?

Only if they were outboards. 4-6 inboard gas engines would be too cramped.

Any update on the injuries? Last I could see there were still six in the hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Plus, it appears that while many have concluded that the boat owner did something wrong, many are saying that he was very meticulous and competent, and that the boat was ventilating at the time. It will be interesting to see if they can ever find an exact cause.....

Off topic, but hey Bill, why don't you put your boat in your signature?

Ah, I see.... diesels suck.......

EDITED for double post.

My reply was in reference to last year's picture of a SD with 5 or 6 outboards photoshopped onto the swim platform - sheesh.

gas fume detectors sound like a great idea until you have one
every one I have seen goes off constantly until the owner finally just eliminates it.
we don't even like replacing them because the don't last and give too many false alarms.
the technology needs to be improved.

also, I agree with the poster who installed squirrel cage blowers
i think it is so funny that boat builders will install a gen set with a sound sheild and then put two of those horrible cheapo screaming blowers that they then tell you to run anytime the generator is on. the noice of most of those blowers is so loud it would really annoy most people
the squirrel cage blowers are almost silent and last much longer
of course they cost more money so good luck getting a boat builder to put them in as standard equipment (the bean counters will kill that one)
Changing the blowers over is a good DIY project however that is certainly worth doing

btw, we had a similar 330 catch on fire here too but it happened while it was sitting in the slip and it put itself out after burning out the complete interior. it was very strange

Again, does anyone have any updated word on the condition of the Meyer's family?

Just like most things, the media loves the initial story, but never follows-up. The last word I saw said that six were still in the Hospital.

So the blowers were on. So either the bower tubes were blocked up by a nest or web or that generator had one good fuel leak.

Thanks for the update, this is turning into such a tragedy! The boater around them that helped evacuate the family immediately after the explosion are true heroes. That selfless act no doubt saved lives...

If anyone gets an update on the family's condition, please let us know how they are doing. Thanks.

The blowers had been turned on.......does not mean they were running at the time of the explosion. Several of us experience blower motors that shut down after some period of time. With the generator running you would never hear if the blowers were running and, unless you happened to look at the dash switch indicator light, you'd never know they weren't running. Obviously pure speculation at this stage....

It will be interesting to see what they can find out. I'd like to see pictures of it once it's out of the water. Wonder where they found another SR to do the comparison with?

If you watch the embedded news video clip in that article they say at the very end that 6 are still listed in critical condition unfortunately.

I believe that news report was from Sunday or Monday (several days ago). I was hoping someone had some current news and the prospect of recovery.
