I just bought a new boat and am wondering if there is a good Expense, Budget, Contact program out there for Boats? or if someone has a great Excel sheet designed.

Thanks for Help!

Welcome to CSR! There was a thread about this a while back. I mean, maybe, a year or more ago. You may try a search.

I've been told that a good rule of thumb is 10-15% of the purchase price per year to cover everything. The bigger the boat, the bigger the purchase price, the bigger the annual maintenance costs.

The three biggest things are going to be:
- dockage (but I noticed you are at Ponce Inlet and maybe you are docking in canal behind your home?)
- fuel (controlled by your travel and fuel price)
- maintenance items (oil changes, repairs)

He is looking for a spreadsheet program. MM

don't do it...you will depress yourself to the point of jumping with the anchor

Congrats on the new purchase... we tend to think of expensess for boats in BOAT Dollars...
keep in mind a BOAT$ = $1000

This is increased by length of your boat there comes a point where a vessel length equates to a BOAT$ =$10,000
I would not add up the expense because it will ruin your boating... if you enjoy the water pay what it costs to keep up your boat.

If you are to stressed over the cost Vs. Enjoyment its time to move on...

I do not have a spreadsheet for your expenses but if you have an iphone Tonkaboater has a wonderful app for tracking expenses...

Hope this helps we have a lot of great people on this site... welcome to CSR!

The biggest expense in boating is depreciation... not fuel.

depreciation + dockage + maintenance + insurance is far greater than the fuel costs on my boat.

Oh yeah... start keeping track of how much you spend on your dog(s)... You'll take them to the SPCA in about 2 months.

I'll agree, you don't want to keep track of expenses. I pay cash when I can just so I don't have to see what I paid a month later.

I would rather not know exactly so I can still enjoy the sport
and my old 1978 needs FAR less than all your new ones I'm sure

My. Buddy kept all his recipes. At the end of every season. Then total them up and every october he would say. " im selling the 320" so i advised him to stop adding it up and just enjoy the boat. He moved to our marina this 2012 season and is plann g to venture out more and not worry about it. Ps I. Use. Boating suite on my ipad. To keep track of things. Good luck.

That may change next year, on the news they are saying that gas is going over $4gal because a couple of refineries are closing on the east coast due to not enough profit: "REALLY" . That was one the reason I walked away from mine when I had the chance last year .

LOL! Thanks for all the advise!!! I am really am not that worried about the expense part. (within reason) I have owned smaller boats and a bunch of jet skiies and have 2 Harleys so I know the $1000 rule. LOL I was looking for something I could tract maintanence costs and scheduling of the maintanence and a good contact list all in one place. Yea I have to replace 3 of the 4 TV's on the boat because of the analog to digital change. I went to a Marine place and the wanted like $1500 for a " Boat TV" It was like 15 inches! I can go to best buy and get 32" Flat for $299. And it will work just fine for my needs.

I will probably just develop an excel sheet!

But again thanks for the Welcome on the site and hope you all enjoy the NEW YEAR!

PS And for copbtx- I keep two sets of books! LOL!!! Actually single and loving it!
