I'm new to boating and just bought a 2007 Seay Ray Sundeck 220. I'm having problems with the cover. It seems like everytime I remove the cover I the snap tears away from the canvas. Is there any solution that's easier than being painstakingly careful when removing the cover. I'm know this seems petty and not a huge boat problem...but I'm just going crazy everytime one comes off. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a defective cover. Most people have problems with the snaps pulling out of the fiberglass, not pulling away from the canvas. Since it looks like you have a new boat, I'd contact your dealer ASAP.

I’m not sure this would have helped your situation, but for future reference most boat stores sell Snap & Zipper lube that helps to keep things in good working order.

Or you can just use the chapstick instead of the lube, course this isn't going to help with the snaps tearing away from the canvas. Definately contact the dealer on this.

If you ripping the canvas, it sounds to my like you're pulling at the canvas versus unsnaping the snap.

you should never pull at the canvas to undo the snaps. If the snaps are hard to remove; take some chap-stick and cover the base of the snap the next time you put the cover back on it will help lube the snaps.

They shouldn't be tearing unless you are hanging from the canvas. I have pulled on mine pretty hard and have never torn my canvas. Lubing the snaps has been suggested on here a lot, but I have never done it. It just seems like evertime I'm down at the dock, I don't think of it and don't have anything to put on there. You should contact the dealer and see what they can do. I had a canvas problem where the screws that held on the plate for the blower vents was wearing a hole through the canvas. They reinforced the whole area with a rubber mat underneath and it has worked great.

My Sea Ray certified mechanic suggested using vaseline.
Was this before or after you got your bill?

I may have already chimed in, but Chap-Stick is great. And it won't leave a mess in the heat and attract dirt like Vasoline will likely do. Plus, Chap-Stick isn't so slick they pop right off, AND it comes in the perfect size for a quick, mess-free application.

I have used Vasoline and a Q-tip.....worked great!

You're not going to post one time for each snap you lubed are you??? :smt043

Sorry about the multiple posting...not sure what happend..and error message popped up, so I clicked submit again. I wish I only had 3 snaps....

Ya, I had errors popping up to. Looks like it's better now.

I think I have too many snaps, but I think I'll take my count over yours.

There is a snap tool you can use, looks like a cross between a spoon and fork to slip under the snap and unclip it from the other snap. You can find it at Overtons, West Marine and other locations.

I would agree that if you are simply pulling at the snap and tearing the cover that something is defective and suggest you take it back to the dealer.

best of luck and welcome to the board.

I use the snap tool mentioned above on my 240 cover. It works great. I'll admit it takes a bit longer, but it eases the snap apart without stressing the canvas itself. It is also used to snap down the cover. It is very handy in hot weather conditions. Before I had it, I literally had large burn blisters on both of my thumbs after putting my cover on on a very hot day (100 degrees F) two summers ago. This was sort of an extreme condition, but it happens.

 Wow, Most of our boating is in 90 to 100+ degree weather and being that we trailer, we're always putting the cover on and taking it off in the hot sun. I've never had any problem, gotten burned etc. Never had a snap break or pull out, never had the top rip. And I haven't even lubed it with chap-stick in 2-3 years either.

I guess I'm lucky.
