Boat collision resulting in death(s)

Imagine the guilt this guy had taking the boat out of the water and putting it in his garage then calling his lawyer. I wonder how people like that live with themselves......

-John

They have another drink?

That's a tough area to run on plane. The killer had to be driving like a maniac. I've got nothing against running 70 or 80 MPH, but night and that area isn't the place.

Debated about posting on BOAT/US's forum, but thought that there might be an outside chance that someone might have seen that boat. Reminded why I don't bother with that forum.

Best regards,
Frank

I live on Long Island, NY I was out yesterday along with thousands of boaters and it sickens me that a HUGE number of boaters ahve no clue on the proper etiquette and, quite frankly, how to operate a vessel in the proper manner. I watched the news this morning and saw this tragic story being a neighbor of New Jersey. I lobby for a REAL license to operate a power driven vessel!!! A road test, a wriitten test, etc. People step into boats with zero boating experience and it kills me that PEOPLE LIKE ME AND YOU get hurt. Be a aresponsible boater. It saddens me that a life is lost on local waters that I love.

Licenses are required for all boaters in NJ. See how much good it does? You can't legislate away irresponsibility or stupidity.

A Cigarette boat? Figures! It was probably that A-hole who came flying towards us at 70+ MPH while we were leaving Green Cove Marina in a no wake zone last year. He also looked like the stereotype. (Belmar mayor type thing)

Very sorry to hear about this Frank. It's truly tragic.

Frank,
I'm very sorry for what happened. My condolences to the family.

This idiot had done a good job covering his position. It'll make harder to determine the alcohol level, since it's been a while. Well, at least he found some balls to step up.

The problem is that required boat license is a new thing and doesn't mean that all boat owners have it.

Do you really need a boating course to tell you that you shouldn't be drunk running a boat at high speed in shallow water at night?

Actually, he's still hiding behind his scum lawyer's skirts. The Post family is well-off. The parents of the man who was killed is also financially secure. I would not want to go up against their resources. I hope they hire one heck of a victim's advocate law firm and ream this scum and his family who helped conceal the boat and crime. That jerk killed the wrong guy.

For people with no comon sense, YES.

There seems to be a common theme here with the “Boaters Safety “course. Don’t get me wrong, people can take the course and still do stupid acts on the water. The difference would be at least they would know how they are supposed to act on the water. I could just image how much crazier the roads would be if we did not require a driver’s test. Could you image everyone not driving on the same side of the road, or not knowing RED means stop?

Granted the safety course or requiring a license to operator a boat will not solve all the issues, but at the very least boaters would have been schooled in the correct way to boat. It has not stopped stupidity on the roads either. But I hate to ponder how much worse it would be without the schooling!

I am a firm believer in a mandatory boater’s safety course. It’s not the end all solution, but every little bit helps.

Just my two cents worth.

I've owned a boat and have been a boater well over two decades. I don't see a difference between before, when education was non-existent, and now, when it's mandatory. An educated drunk is still drunk and and drunks are not judicious, no matter how extensive the education.

Best regards,
Frank

I thought I made myself clear when I said education is “not the end all solution”, and you are correct in what you said about an “educated drunk”.

But should we give up on the education programs, because some don’t listen?

I have only been boating for three years, so I do not have all the sea experience of boating all my life. This is exactly why I want all the education I can get? Common sense can tell me not to operate my boat drunk, but only the education can tell me the correct way to pass a boat, and so on.

I'm all for boater ed and license. As the years go by boats and hrs on the the water have increased. The fact that there are still accidents does not mean education is a failure. The success of an education program is sometimes hard to measure. Sort of like a lighthouse......how can you ever know how many accidents that lighthouse has prevented........but it is easy to count the wrecks.

I'm not against education. I'm dubious of the conventional wisdom and associating fix X with problem Y. Since the collision, there's one group calling for speed limits, there's another group looking for something else, etc. etc. Everyone has their pet fix and they're all trotting them out on the grand opportunity of someone's death.

Best regards,
Frank

How about throw the dude in jail, hire a PR firm to advertise it, and ban him from boating for life after he gets out in 20 years (with a new boyfriend).

Frank,
I heard on the radio that they're looking to post 10mph speed limit at night hours. I'm not sure if it applies for being in the channel as well. However, I think small things like that could prevent number of accidents. A little bit of something does help. Enforcing education and putting some restrictions will save some lives.

Alex.

10 mph speed limit at night? Good gad. Next they will demand headlights and tail lights on the boats.

Not sure exactly where this accident occurred. . .but from what I read, the general area where this happened is LITTERED with no wake zones. . .the open areas between the no wake zones is very limited.

Honestly. . an example of one bad apple ruining things for everyone.
