I have a friend of mine who lost his leg this year to diabetes. So I am currently waxing his boat for him and getting it ready for spring launch. But, this boat is dirty and cutting through the grime is tough. Anyone with any recommendations on a good product to use to get back the shine? My boats have never got to this condition, so this is new to me.

Bill,

I've had good results using 3M cleaner/wax to cut thru dirt, not oxidation. I have some 3M cleaner/wax, after the marina splashes my boat tomorrow morning, I will walk over and give you a hand.

John

John,
This needs something heavier then the cleaner wax, I started with that without too much luck. When you saw me at the shop yesterday I was getting a heavier oxidation remover and that was working better. I’ll tell you it sure does make you appreciate always having a good coat of wax on the boat because it makes the next wax so much easier!

After washing the surface use meguiars #49 + a rotary tool with a wool pad.

After the surface is clean via the above process you then need to protect the surface with your preferred polish/wax.

Here is our secret weapon: Hi-Temp Products, Extreme Power Cut Leveler

http://http://www.hitempinc.com/compounds/

The Power Cut Leveler is water not solvent based so you squirt some out in a cup, add a little water, stir it well ( about the consistency of cheap catsup) and paint on about a 2' X2' area, then get on it with a wool pad or foam pad on a low speed (1800-2200) rotary polisher. Work it like a compound and stay with it until the haze is gone. It does have a mild abrasive in it, but it will not leave swirl marks like solvent based compounds will. It The Extreme Power cut won't get the oxidation , your only alternative is to compound first with a heavy solvent based compound, then follow with the Hi Temp Product.

I am sure there are other products and methods, but we have the best results with the least amount of work using the Power Cut Leveler.

Bill......Nice job helping your friend out with his boat

Agreed, very nice of you to help out a friend in need. I'll be doing the same later today when I paint the bottom of a friends boat. My secret weapon has always been Buff Magic, however without seeing the boat, it's hard to tell if you might need something stronger. I will say that I have seen some miracles with Buff Magic though.

Well as I was cutting into the heavy oxidization yesterday afternoon I was thinking to myself, man you heart is bigger than your brain!

I can vouch for the Leverage oxidation remover. I think Jim sells it here on BOE. I was actually quite amazed that it was able to bring a severely oxidized boat back to a shine with just one product.

Bill,

I've been in situation when I had to use something stronger. Normally I use Meguiars #67 One Step Compound, but I had to switch to #91 Power Cut Compound. When I switched and used Porta Cable it would still take very long time for a small spot. So, I bought Makita rotary with wool pads and it made a night and day difference.

Kudos for stepping in for your friend.

My mistake Bill, I thought the boat was just dirty. Start a rumor there will be free beer there tomorrow, maybe you know who will stop down to help.

John

Bill, new guy at work details boats and swears by collinite , says to clean with collinite 920 that strips away all the old wax, grease, dirt. Then use starbrite with ptf , its very nice of you to help your friend.Good luck

Bill,

Above is a good thread from earlier in the week that may help you out... I've had great luck with 3M products. Sounds like you may be in for a 2 or 3 step process if you really want to bring it back. At least a solid day's work.

BTW, I've always been told that character is doing the right thing when doing the wrong thing is easier. Much respect for taking care of your friend.

I also support the Meguiars #67. I took John's advice the other year and I have to say it works amazingly well. Follow up with some flagship wax and you should be good to go.

That is what is was as I spent all day Saturday working on it, John (XRavenX) came over and helped for awhile, thanks John. I did use the Meguiars #49 and that cut through the heavy stuff real well, did most of it by hand though so that took the time. After that I went over the whole boat with Meguiars Flagship Premium (black bottle) cleaner / wax, which I think is new this year, I have not seen it before. Followed everything with another coat of pure wax, this poor girl needed some good protection and she really came out looking good.

Bill,

The only Meguiars Flagship Premium (black bottle) cleaner / wax I know is their new Flagship WAX. It's been introduced last year in 16oz. buttles. This year they introduced 32oz buttles. I've used it last year and was pretty happy with the results. I'm not sure why would you put PURE WAX on top of the Flagship Premium Wax? IMO, the FPW is to be used instead of the older regular wax.

Mequiars has both a Flagship Premium Marine Wax and a Flagship Premium Cleaner Wax, two different products. They also carry the #50 Cleaner Wax in the blue bottle. I've had all three of these products for over two years and am unaware of a new Flagship Wax. BTW....they are all good products.

According to http://marinerv.meguiars.com/product/Gel-Coat-Protect (their official site) I don't see "Flagship Premium Cleaner Wax". Here's what they list.

Products No. 50 Cleaner Wax
A non-abrasive formula that cleans, polishes and protects all boats and RV's in one easy step. Removes light oxidation and haze, minor scratches and swirls. Provides long-lasting protection against salt air, corrosion and the sun's ultraviolet rays. Available in liquid or paste.

No. 56 Pure Wax
Durable high gloss protection for fiberglass and all painted surfaces. Blend of pure Brazilian carnauba wax with silicones, polymers and resins to maintain extraordinary gloss and protection. Protects against the sun's ultraviolet rays.

No. 63 Flagship Premium Marine Wax
Dramatically enriches color and shine of fiberglass and gel coat surfaces. Effective in removing light oxidation and dullness, restoring gloss, and adding protection from UV damage. *Use wax only after the surface has been cleaned and restored to a “like new” or “average” finish
