Hi all,

Quick question. At the moment my boat is in a freshwater slip and has not been bottom painted. I am thinking about moving the boat to a slip that is in brackish water. I have been told this definitely will require a bottom paint job.
Any thoughts on this?

No matter what water you are in, if you are leaving it wet slipped for prolonged periods, you NEED bottom paint. It is not really an option, if you don't do it you'll will have lot of growth very quickly which can even prevent the boat from planing. I use mine every weekend in brackish and still get growth to where I have to clean it to prevent performance problems. A soft ablative bottom paint allows the growth to fall off during use. You'd be surprised at what can grow on a boat bottom in just 30 days.

It kinda depends on the "brackish" water. You may get hard growth - you may just get soft growth. Soft growth can be cleaned off - and depending on how quickly it grows could determine whether it's worth it to you... time spent cleaning vs cost/upkeep of painting and having a "bottom painted" boat that could affect resale.

Check around with others in the area to see if anyone is not bottom painting and how it's going for them. That will be your best way to figure this out.

Just a follow up! I have contracted a facility to bottom paint my boat including the outdrive for 2600.00
The facility is in Napa Ca...Seems like a reasonable price?

Thanks for the info, another reason people are leaving California!
