Boat accident and death Monday night

12 people on a boat? Must be a really big boat....

We went out July 4th for the fireworks and I forgot my camera... One person died here in Hampton because a 7-year old was given the wheel and turned it real fast and drove the boat under a dock...

I don't know why I am always amazed at seeing 14 foot Jon boats with 8-10 people in them, people drinking, no life jackets, a flashlight as a navigation light and 6 inches of freeboard heading out on the Chesapeake Bay to watch fireworks with 300 hundred other boats....

I've heard rumor that the boat was in the 25' range. If so, they were obviously overloaded, and must have been going wayyyyy too fast.

As for the Hampton story...7 years old??? Geeezzz:smt021
 
Hard to believe these people do these stupid things. After fireworks on the Delta Sunday I hear all of these boats fire up trying to head back to their docks & ramps. 10:30PM and it's hard during the day to navigate through all of the anchor lines add boats and these guys do it at night? Tempting fate is all I could think...
 
22 foot w/ 10 people on board. What kind of a man drives a speedboat with his family on board while under the influence in the dark.

How many times does something like this have to happen before someone stops the driver, takes the keys, uses common sense. I guess once you've been drinking, common sense isn't common anymore.

How very sad.
 
We had one a few days ago near the statue of liberty, 17' anchored near the statue when a 30' jumped a wake and landed on top of them killing the operator of the 17' who was supposed to get married next month. the 30' captain was arrested for BWI he had his kids and wife onboard also.
 
I stayed in all weekend. Don't go on the Potomac Memorial day weekend, 4th of July or Labor day weekend. I did go out about 4pm last night.(After the weekend) It was nice and all the idiots were off the water.
A guy got pulled in for BWI in front of my marina in the Occoquan at 10:30 on the 4th. He blew a .25 on the breath test. Isn't that near death?
 
I just found out that my niece is friends with the girl who died in this crash. What a tragedy.

Deckworks, where was the BWI on the 4th? We're docked at FYC.

In front of Captain Johns. Next marina down. Apparently they had 3 other boats pulled over before they got this guy off of his boat. They were stopping everyone is my understanding. Va DNR guys. It was his first BWI arrest I'm told.
 
Boating and alcohol don't mix. I think the only way to get though to the stupid people who think it's just fine to drink and drive is for the courts to prosecute BWIs to the fullest extent possible. A minimum charge of involuntary manslaughter, or whatever Virginia law can offer as a charge, seems to be in order.
 
Alcohol and boating do mix. It's just sad we have idiots that don't know how or when to mix them. It's great to set in the slip or on the dock at the END of the day and pop a top with your neighbors. It's the perfect mix.
 
Tied to the dock isn't boating.

BOAT/US and a few magazine ran a couple of demonstrations projects a few years ago. They setup an on-water course and then had several people negotiate the course and dock the boat. They all did fine before drinking, but even after one drink their performance was negatively impacted. Performance became substantially worse even when the operators were below the legal limit.
 
Sad stories here... These stories is the exact reason our DNR is real strict when it comes to boating while drinking (.08, same as driving while drinking) and a 25 mph speed limit after sunset.

I saw a deal these last weekend on Okoboji that a guy had a 17' boat with 10-11 people in it. DNR guys where right on top of him and escorting him to a local public dock where they forced everybody off the boat and boarded to check for life jackets. I am sure he then received a ticket for too many people!!
