Well the factory installed battery isolator failed last year and I replaced it with a battery combiner from Blue Sea “7600 CL-Series BatteryLink™ Automatic Charging Relay (Current Limiting) with Overcurrent Protection.”

It did a good job of keeping the starting and house battery charged but did not isolate the house loads form starting the port engine. As a result the Northstar M121 and Radar would cycle off every time I started the engine. I do a lot of drift fishing and trolling. I do not need both engines for this. As you know the power steering is off the starboard engine so that’s the engine we use the most.

I remembered a review Jim did on Blue sea 7610-SI-Series Automatic Charging Relay. “It protects sensitive electronics by temporary isolation of house loads from engine circuit during engine cranking“ So I ordered one up from Jim I actually got the 7650 ADD A BATTERY ACR and battery switch. Since I had installed the 7600 the 7610 went right in. The difference here is the ignition start sense wire that you have to run to the 7610. I pulled a line off the starter relay on top of the engine.

I was very happy when I fired up the engine and the M121 hung right in there. The start battery volt meter dropped on the dash during start but the M121 showed the house battery voltage holding right at baseline. After a little run time the M121 voltage display showed the house battery charging at the same level as the start battery concluding that the Charge relay was working.

It’s nice when things work like they are advertised.

Thanks for the review Jim. I could not find the link though.
