Black Streaks are driving me crazy - suggestions please

We have found Magic Erasers to do ALL SORTS of boat-cleaning! They took off the black streaks, too, that we could not get off. (Worked on our camper, too!) My understanding of the black streaks was that the black rubber caulking washes down over time. That theory worked for our camper but I don't see this black-rubber caulking on the boat!

I cannot comment on the wax for the Magic Erasers - the boat was desperately in need of wax when we bought it and full of black streaks. We cautiously used a Magic Eraser and it worked! I would be careful, though - there has to be some sort of abrasive to make those things actually work so use at your own risk.

Also - we were struggling with getting the vinyl and the textured floor areas clean when we got our boat. Those Erasers (which were previously relegated to "ridiculous and only good for scrubbing the stainless sink" status by me) were PHENOMENAL! The textured areas looked brand new. The seats - it was just amazing. Again - I'd use this with caution - it has to be a little abrasive but our seats didn't seem to have any problem at all. We gave a few coats of Armor All after the cleaning - maybe just to make ourselves feel better but they're looking great. And it's hard to believe they belong to a 15-year-old boat!

I will definitely be taking a lot of the advice on this thread for cleaning and keeping things clean - this site has been so, so useful for us as our last boat was a 17' aluminum fishing boat almost as old as me!

Now - if we could just get rid of the poopy smell that's EVERYWHERE...

Welcome aboard, Wine. Yes, you are right about the abrasiveness. The eraser should be delegated to one of the "last resort" cleaners. In fact, there are other things that can provide the same result without "erasing" the vinyl. Do a search on this forum for the ME - you'll find more threads about it. Also, do not use Armor All on boat seats - it's not good for the stitching. Stick with marine cleaners - they are formulated differently than the automotive stuff. Actually, truth be told, I wouldn't use AA on my car, either - it just makes things look shiny (greasy) - it doesn't really do any protecting.

Your smell could be a a holding tank filter that needs to be replaced or recharged - search for recharging the filter - there's a good thread on that. It could be old lines that are seeping odor. Check out those things and then start a new thread, if you still need help. When's the last time the holding tank was pumped out AND flushed?

EDIT: Scott - you beat me! I think we're 'bout even, now!
