Recently, the birds have become worse at hanging out on the front railings on my boat and making a mess, anyone have a technique for getting them to go away. I know, it's probably imposible, but worth a try, Thanks, Dan

The owl idea is good. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
One thing we have noticed here on the Chesapeake and in our marina for sure. We have a Osprey nest not too far from two of our piers. Both of those piers have experienced almost zero issues with the birds especially the sea gulls. Now the other pier - well let's say it is bird dropping zone.
So, not sure what predatory birds you have their but that might help.

We spray our dock and boat with an insecticide to prevent spiders and other bugs. This reduces an important food supply and they go elsewhere.

I'm curious as to what kind of bug spray you use for anti-spiders, and if you've been applying it to your fiberglass? I've been afraid to put anything on the fiberglass for fear of causing some kind of damage.

They make a spray that is clear as water and they say it will not stain any surface. I just bought some and will try it. It is called Hot Shot.

So if you put a rubber owl out to scare off the birds, what do you use to scare off the owls? A rubber condor?

We have a barn owl that lives in the piling at the end of our finger pier. Its beautiful to watch but you wanna talk about bird crap.... the thing sits in the rafters above my boat and I get droppings....or more like ploppings with bones and fur in it. And this stuff really stains.

This weekend I am going to wrap silver xmas garland around the 2 x 4s and see if that will scare it away.

We have the same problem with swallows. Put zip ties on the railing about 3" apart. Looks dumb, but it works

hey thanks for the idea's, an Internet search brings up a lot on this, One thing that get's mentioned a lot is fishing line strung a short distance above the area, birds apparently have a good memory, once they bump into something they cant see, they get spooked and stay away, it looks weird, but maybe wire ties about 4-6ft' apart, the excess pointing up with tiny holes at the tips, fishing line through the holes, wierd but maybe not too too noticeable, and like mentioned earlier, they're supose to have a good memory, once they bump into the line, they might not come back, so removing the line might be ok after a few days or so, I might try this and let you know... Thanks!

here's some idea's some from Boatus.

I use Sevin which is an insecticide used to spray fruit trees and gardens. I buy the disposable sprayer that attaches to a garden hose and do the entire dock and hose the boat down from top to bottom. The entire process takes five minute or less. Sevin is a clear white liquid that leaves white spots all over the boat. I let it dry for a day and then wash to boat to get rid of the spots. It is only necessary to spray the dock in the spring, but we do I do it again in August after picking up a load of spiders cruising for five weeks all over Lake Michigan.

at first I didn't read the link in post #2 because I thought it was about owl's but it's really not, there's a good idea there, thanks Lazy Daze, if the wire ties don't work I'll try that.

Yes. Its called my integrally suppressed ruger 77/22 LR. Built by TBA Suppressors. Why do you think the birds that used to sh*t all over my truck at my shop leave me alone now. Pellet gun quiet. Other than that youve got fake animals like snakes and owls, chemicals, and messing with their possible nesting locations.

We use Owls as well. Now the birds sit with the fake owls when they are not sitting on their heads. This really pi.....ss off the owls!

You're right. I was actually referring to the owl's with a little tongue in cheek humor :smt001. But, yes, there are some good ideas in that thread.
