It does take some getting used to larger Trim Tabs as your first experiences with coming on to plane with them points out. But I am sure that once you got used to them their use became second nature.
I know that our Auto Tab Retractor has been adapted to work when the shift is engaged to neutral, or reverse, but the shifter needs to have some sort of switch incorporated into it. We really do not have any information on that that I can give you, so it would be a "home-brewed" project on your part.
As you see by Melida's post his larger Trim tabs appear to be holding up well. While I can't put an "official endorsement" on a single actuator on a Trim tab with that much chord, as I said in a my previous post, the proof is in the results.
