Big Fire in Quincy, MA Marina

What a huge loss for those families. Is Quincy a large enough boating area that they could justify having a fire boat right there, instead of 45 minutes away?

I keep my boat at just up the river from Captains Cove and it is a bit run down. The owner doesn't put much into it.

To answer you question about Quincy, it is big enough it has a lot of coast line. There is also several gas and diesel storage fatalities in Quincy so they get a lot of large tanker and barge traffic.

looking at the size of those boats I`ll wager a guess it started at/near a battery or a battery charger or a corroded shore power connection

I am surprised to hear that the BFD fire boat took 45 minutes. A pleasure craft has a long no wake zone out of the inner harbor but an emergency boat should be able to get there in 15 minutes I would think. It's 11 Nm from where the fire boats are to the marina.

Such a shame...a new live-aboard couple lost everything.

The nearest boat to Quincy that can fight a fire is Hingham but it only pumps seawater not foam. Quincy by itself could not support a fire boat but if you combined Quincy with Braintree, Weymouth and Hull it may make sense. That being said the time between fires marina in all those towns combined would be 2-4 years. Boston is still the best option. Our yacht club is in Braintree 2 miles from the Quincy fire and we are required to have fire stantions on our docks. I don't believe Captains Cove had the same requirement. As was said Captains Cove is known for being a cheap marina run on a shoe string budget.

BTW the new liveaboards had just moved on to an older 26ft. Fours Winns. Insurance???

i saw that they were in a 26' four winns. my guess was floating meth lab but i have a funny sense of humor...
no couple can live in a 26' cruiser in new england.

Supposedly the offending boat, a Carver has been on the market for several years. The pwmers have been heard telling conflicting accounts of the events that led up to the fire. I think we will find that there is more to this. Locally we have heard that shore power connection was to be blame but the woman aboard said her hairdryer created a spark.

there was a 400 or 420 for sale there for a couple of years also but they kept updating photos every few months online and it looked spectacular. i have never been to that marina but south shore testimonials are that the place was not well kept and management doesnt care.

Pennies a pound builder could add a flame retardant to the resin systems. Just say'n.
