Hi All,

Was wondering where I could buy a new set of bed coverings (we call them quilts) for the Stateroom and 2nd cabin for a 400db. Mine are still in great condition but they look a little dated.

Thanks Ozzie

I think your best bet is to buy something you like at any store like Linens 'n' Things, Bed, Bath & Beyond, or any department store. Then have them altered to fit. My wife sews really well and she and I have made all of our bedding from stuff we bought at Kohl's, Joann Fabrics, etc.

I'm going through this right now as well. I noticed you have the same year boat I have and so you have that "90's mediterranean" look in the boat. My view on the soft goods in a boat are probably a little different. If you have a boat worth over $300K, you need to make sure you get the job done so it looks like the boat is worth over $300K. Spending $200 to redo the interior will look like you spent... well... $200 to redo the interior.

We have a designer that did the inside of our house now working on the inside of our boat. They typically have "work rooms" that they deal with that have loads of experience in doing just about any type of drapery work, bed covering work, pillow work, etc. If you are happy with the shapes of your current soft goods, they can take the ones you have and unstitch them to make patterns. If you see something in newer boating brochures, websites, or magazines and show pictures, they can design that as well but will have to do templates of the boat.

We are moving away from the "silk" look on the soft goods and to more of the cotton look that seems to be popular today. If you go to Sunbrella.com, they have an online fabric selector and you can see some of the fabric combinations and they have a boat interior that "changes" based on the selections you make. It is very limited though... it just shows a bed and a helm I believe. You really have to stay with fabrics though that just update the "90's mediterranean" look and so thinks like navy blue with red cording type of nautical look you would see on a Hinckley just won't work. That's where a designer can really be worth their fee. A designer will come up with stitch and quilting patterns and types of curtains that make it all flow and keep the value of the boat from looking homemade. They can also bring other fabrics in from Ralph Lauren, Europe, etc. that you would never think of and do things with colors you would never think of.

That's my 2 cents... but I'm a picky bastard so to each his own. I know someone that, 8 years ago, bought a $700K house and then didn't want to spend the money on furniture and went and filled it up with unfinished furniture from a place called "Good Wood Furniture", bought some drapes from Lowes, and it made the place look like a $70K mobile home.

I doubt our stuff will be done before our big trip this year but that's fine...

Some people may also pipe up and say it's time for a new boat if you don't like the bedspreads... :)

I do take a bit of offense to Gary's comments. My wife and I re-designed the cabin of our old 340 with the main goal of toning down the '80s era colors and updating. I don't think ours looks like a mobile home. In fact some of the fabric we used was Tommy Bahama. We are picky as well. However, it is not a $300k boat and if I owned one I may feel differently.

I do agree about getting away from the silk/satin look. There are so many nice fabrics out now that a designer should be able give you what you want.

Do what you are most comfortable with. I'm fortunate that my wife is creative and sews really well. We have a close friend that is an interior designer and she liked what we did. But I wasn't going to pay a designer do make the changes on a $50,000, 19-year old boat.

I wasn't pointing my comments at you so you shouldn't be offended. I noticed in his signature that he had an 03 400 DB which is a newer boat and has significant value. I've seen a few boats where people think it's ok to do the HGTV "Design on a Dime" or "While you were out" and it really destroys the boat's value IMO. I have no idea what your boat looks like and it may be great but the few I've seen that the interior is DIY picking stuff out... looks like DIY picking stuff out. Designers do not charge that much and a good one really does bring a lot to the table... It just depends on the "look" one is going for.

Bed coverings..

Well guys, I don't want you blokes being bitchy with each other..OK! The option of doing it ourselves is out (My wife can't sew and is a lousy cook) Corporate girl

I tried the Sea Ray site but no link to order to bed coverings only linen

someone might have a clue

I put bedding on both Vberth and aft cabin today. TJ Max special...coral design etc. They look awesome. You don't have to spend $50K for it to look good. Aft cabin was easy since it's basically a twin bed but Vberth was tricky. It does help to know someone who sews. I love my wife!!

Why do you have to take that attitude? Not everyone can afford a $400,000 boat. Congratulations to you that you can. You either worked hard to get to that point in your life or someone handed it to you. In either case, good for you, seriously. But why make people that are doing the best they can feel like crap?

Boating is about being on the water with friends and family. I see guys like you and you're not about that. You're about "look at me, look what I have and you don't."

Some people do the best they can and they're happy with that and proud of themselves for what they have done. You are the type that seems to go out of his way put down what others have done. I posted pictures of the cabin of my boat that my wife and I worked our asses off to re-upholster and I received many comments from others on this site that complimented us on our hard work. Your comment was "....another boat that needs a mirror ball." How unfair.

I've gone back and looked at some of your past posts. You seem to be helpful to those that have boats in your price range and sarcastic and demeaning to the rest. Why don't you continue to help those that share your station in life and just keep your comments to everyone else, to yourself. We don't need it.

Wow... nice personal attack.

Look... the original poster asked a question about replacing soft goods on a fairly new boat that does have significant value and, like mine (and yours), has a dated looking interior (remember I called my interior that 90's med look where as I think the 80's Sea Rays do have that disco look). If you go to Sea Ray and buy replacements, they are going to be very expensive and you are going to be stuck with fabric patterns they have pre-selected and may still be dated. That's if they even will coordinate a purchase like this between their OEM to begin with. They may just say take a hike. My recommendation is to go out and have a designer use the original patterns and pick some quality fabrics out with some professional help to update the look but not clash with what he has. Believe or not, getting professional help on a job like that would be on the order of $1000 plus the cost of materials and labor on the soft goods. It will probably be on the same order of cost as just reordering the original stuff... Not $50,000.

Because I think it's a mistake to go out and get a TJ Max special coral pattern and have the "wife sew it up" on the type of boat the original poster has makes me a bad person. I'm just stating my opinion that when that is done to something like a 2003 400 DB, it looks cheap and out of place. A tank of fuel for that boat is about $1500 but he should go out and "redecorate" for $100? The original poster didn't say he wanted to replace the soft goods on the cheap did he? In fact, he sounds like me: His wife can't cook or sew.

This is like the time that someone posted about what to do on a 2 to 3 year old boat where the outdoor carpet backing was falling apart and I said to toss them in the dumpster and get some better ones from snapincarpet and a few from the peanut gallery said "Don't assume everyone can afford that and you should just go to the local Ace hardware store and get a gallon of plast-o-goop and paint it on the back."

So Mr. Retard... give me a break. You don't know what I'm really like and you shouldn't be spouting off when I'm trying to weigh in on the original question. To quote a famous movie: "I suggest you and your Kmart Jaclyn Smith Collection outfit... stay the hell away from Derek Zoolander."

I was sitting here scratching my head about this because I don't even remember seeing pictures of your boat. If you go back and look, the only time I mentioned "mirror ball" I was referring to a shiny couch w/rope lights were the owner even called it the "Don Johnson Miami Vice" look. I even commented on the nice work the guy did. The other time I was referring to an all white bed/pillows/walls picture. So... I don't even know where you are coming from wiener brain... Seems you may be a little self conscious about something. BTW... your boat interior looks nice.

PS: I didn't get anything handed to me and I didn't work for it either. I borrowed everything on a subprime loan and credit cards. When the banks stopped lending I started stealing and doing drugs.

Thanks for the responses. I do not want to prolong this but I will say that I should not have made this a personal attack and I apologize. You are entitled to your opinion. But when a guy with an '81 260 says he did a nice job with stuff from TJ Max and it looks awesome, a response of "I'll bet" sounds a bit condescending.

You're right, I don't know you but you appear to have a really good and wry sense of humor. I appreciate that. Please forgive my judgment call.

Well.... I am hurt so I am not going to apologize for calling you Mr. Retard and weiner brain... Yet...

I am hurt because I just dropped an 8D battery on my good foot. Damn it.

Mirror balls are actually coming back in style and there are several places you can get them online.

Hi Sydney Steve..

Just to digress a little, I am at Bilgola Plateau..so pretty close considering this board is hosted a long way away..

I love the mirrored balls might give those a try (LOL)
