Bay Marine Storage Fire Waukegan

Crap. :(

That sucks. The boat market is already tight around here.

I actually looked at a boat offered through that marina. Wasn't that building but still its a small world.

It's actually a pretty new building, with offices and a showroom attached. Really sucks for them, and us as we have very little competition in the area and prices are, shall I say, high.

I am stored in the building. First off, there were supposedly 50-100 men fighting the fire and nobody was injured so that’s great. I went to the building twice today. First this morning and they were still pumping water inside at 7 am. Then again around 12-1 pm and I able to gain access and see that my boat was not a casualty to the fire but the smoke and soot will be determined in the next few days. My claim has been filed and I’m anxiously awaiting to see what the process involves. Shitty last 24 all around. Hopefully some good news is coming my way. The doors are shut and the heat is back on inside as it’ll be in the teens tonight.

Best wishes Max!

Any ideas what happened? Several years ago, Skipper buds had a fire and most boats survived, all be it with some smoke issues.

I have not heard. I was talking with the fire inspector for a minute but he couldn’t give any info until he finished his investigation. The conditions were tough with 2-3” of water and foam on the ground draining out and turning to ice so I’m not sure if or when the investigators were done. I do know the building is now closed and the heat is back on.
On the flip side I’ve heard several different rumors which I don’t care to pass along. Once I hear, I’ll post it here.

There was a fire in a newer boat storage building near my storage spot a number of years ago. All the boats were totalled that were in the building (over 100 large boats). The ensuing investigation found that it was one of the building's ceiling lights which shorted out when they were turned on by a worker. The resulting sparks set a boat cover on fire and it grew quickly. Once the worker realized there was fire, 911 was called. Apparently, the fire department was unable to access the fire any other way than to open the large front door but by then the fires were hot but dying from lack of oxygen - until the doors were opened... Nothing even recognizable as a boat remained once it burned itself out.

Yeah, but rumors are the best. :)

Bummer, best of luck.

Passing only good thoughts... Hope it all works out!

Great to hear your boat is still in one piece. And hopefully the soot/smoke damage will be easily remedied? It looks to me like you don't have a lot of isenglass/canvas to worry about. So that's nice.

If you're willing to share - how many boats burned? It's impressive (to me) that they can stop a fire inside a building like that. Once that fiberglass starts going...I have to believe its very difficult to get the next boat cool enough to not light up.

Big time bummer for those that weren't so fortunate.

I know in the Skipper Buds fire a few years ago, the sprinklers turned on and helped. Being a new building, it probably had good sprinklers.

Unfortunately I took my waterproofed seat cover off for repair so the white seats were exposed so I’m anxious to see how they held up after the ice melted. Other than that, the only other canvas is on the bow sun pads. When I put eyes on it the boat was covered in a thin layer of ice. I’m optimistic that the cold didn’t do any engine damage due to the length of time the heat was off and the door was open vs when it was closed and the building was sealed up. Time will tell. The claim will be open until we get a chance to basically sea trial the boat at launch. Still waiting for the fire department finish its investigation and the surveyor is on standby ready to assess.

There are fire retardants that easily could be added to polyester resins. All or our glass parts meet UL 94 V 0 flame spread or better. Yes. it add to the cost.

Finally was able to visit the boat yesterday. I fared quite well all things considered. I need a top to bottom/inside out complete detail and there will be some smoke remediation needed in the cabin. All my seats are trashed and will be replaced along with the bow pads and any covers that were out. All the bedding and mattresses will get replaced. The teak looks terrible and am getting quotes to replace that as well. The engine room checked out perfectly. Other than that, there was no water or moisture in the boat and if everything goes as planned we should be in the water by our original splash date in mid-April.

Glad to hear you came through pretty unscathed. I see you are in Chicago. Where is your summer mooring location? Are you in the city?
