Jim M. - I'm sorry I take a little offense to your comment as I am a cop and whenever I do my job I'm always inconveniencing them that is until the poop hits the fan and now I couldn't be there fast enough. I use to work part time for a large metropolitan park district police department that had navigable water ways through it. Part of our duties was checking boaters. Why because until you have done body recoveries and death notifications you cannot possibly understand how truly awful it is. So if interrupting a few minutes of your time to ensure that your legal is a problem for you in sorry but it's not for me because I don't want to be the one to have to tell your loved ones you are not coming home.

+1 on that I have been there and done that also, and you are right on point no one gets it until they have to do that. And we are never there when they need us we are only there to bust ba!!s so I was always told. God bless and stay safe

The one thing the Coast Guard said to me, which may be law, but I disagree with it entirely. My thowable (seat cushion type) is stowed inside my center console of the whaler. It is easily accessed, and always in a known spot. They told me it had to be on the deck while underway.

In my opinion, this is stupid. In waves, in wind, and in panic, wouldn't it be smarter to have the device in a known position rather than strewn somewhere on the boat, god knows where, after the crap hits the fan? It takes no more time to remove it from the center console than it would to unfasten it from a mounted location.....Clear case of rules overriding commonsense if you ask me.

Guess we're really lucky up here in Canada. Both the RCMP AND the Coast Guard patrol our local waters and we've found them both to be class acts. They're polite, and quick, and if they see a current "Power Squadron" inspection sticker, they just keep on going. Although maybe they keep on going because we've been pulled over so many times that they now recognize us. Our only wish is that there were more of them to go around. Even with constant patrols during the summers there are still way too many idiots on our waters that think nothing of endangering other people.

Funny how in America if you say most blacks are criminals, most mexicans are illegals, most gays are pedophiles... you get hammered (as you should) for being a bigot. But spout off in the same way about cops and not a word is said. Well I will say it. People like you call the cops faster than you can say hipocrite when your car gets scratched or your neighbors party is too loud. Think twice because those "jerks" do the things you are afraid to do.
