It is time to change out the three batteries on our boat. Any recommendations other than just replacing with three type 27s?

I guess I would recommend trying to squeeze some more life out of these and wait until spring. Seems like a shame to buy 3 batteries so close to the end of the season...

might see if group 31 would fit
they may be slightly larger but not much
make sure if you buy that the batteries have a national warranty..if not buy when you get where you're going

There will be different opinions on what type of battery (lead acid, AGM, gel, etc). Me, I like the low cost of lead acids and if you can keep the battery on a charger when not using it, I'd be surprised if you didn't get at least 5 years (or more) out them. It's hard to argue (although I'm sure some will :smt001 ) with the bang-for-the-buck of that.

FYI, your engines only require a group 24 for starting. Obviously the 27's (or larger) will give you the increased "hook time", though.

I ran my 280ss with interstate 27s and a ProMariner 3 bank charger. The previous owner had a lot of battery issues but the ProMariner seemed to solve them.

I bought 2 Die Hard Platinum AGM group 31 April of '12 for the port (house) batteries and had to replace them both this summer. Neither would take a charge or hold it. After 48 hrs on a charger at home the best I could get was 9v on one and 7v on the other. Within 24 hours they came down to 3v and 2v respectively. Best news is that Sears took them both back and replaced them with brand new off the shelf. Sears does offer a 3 year warranty, but did need to try and charge both of them and test them before they would hand over more than $550 in batteries....Yes they are expensive. One thing I did notice is that the old ones had manufacture dates of 6/11 if I remember correctly (almost 10 months on the shelf :wow:). New ones both had man dates less than 1 month old. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for 4-5 yrs. out of these. I went with these on the recommendation of a boater and what I took from the internet about AGM technology. Also from what I understand there are only a hand full of battery manufacturers and everyone just slaps their own label on the battery. The Sears Die Hard marine is supposed to be the same as the Odyssey brand battery (military use) and a high end in battery market. However after this I will prob go back to the low cost flooded acid. I had Interstates in my old boat and was very happy with them. A few friends are all using Interstate and are getting 4-5 seasons and avg. hook times. I did hear that more and more batteries are going to 1 year warranties cause too many customers are draining batteries down to 0% charge, recharging and just killing the batteries over a 2-3 year time frame. That being said any "warranty" make sure you read all the fine print, and if you are purchasing before the move make sure it is from a national retailer.... otherwise maybe wait till your at your destination. I am still wired into my original on board 3 bank charger which when tested is putting out the correct amps and volts from what a novice can gather with a meter in hand.

I'm with the low cost lead acids and an on-board charger too. Just now needing to replace my 6 year old Everstart Marine 27's, one of the 3 just started a voltage issue. Ran gels once and could not justify the cost again. If double the cost gave double the life it would be worth agm or gel but that does not seem to be the case. I'm now waiting until spring for our new set, only another month or so left.

We purchase and resell from a battery importer here (the dirty industry left these shores years ago).

I put four 6v deep cycles in my boat last year.

On my marina is one of the main guys from the company.

After I fitted them we were discussing wet, AGM etc. his take, 95% only need Lead

Now I'm sitting back waiting for it guys.......

Of course if you want to buy from me, you need a Gel
