My ProMariner Pro Tech i-Series charger is not charging. The LED lights are on but when the generator is on but there is no voltage output on the meter at the battery. I have not climbed back to the unit yet to put the leads on it. On the output to the generator battery there is a fuse. (it is ok). Is there a fuse on the original outputs to the house batteries? Any reset on this device? Other than testing all three outputs, any other things to check? If I have to replace it is this a good one? It is still available and would wire in easy. Is there a better one?

Thanks for checking out my question,

MM

Call or e-mail Promariner customer service they will get back to you, they were very helpful when I replaced my charger this summer. I have the name and e-mail address of the customer service guy, however it is at work. If no one else responds with his name I will have it Monday.

Shortly after I had gotten my boat, the Pro-Mariner duel 20 went south on me. Had fuses per leg just as you describe. The no load out put voltage tested low! Batteries were dead dead when I looked at the boat prior to purchase. I suspect charging them may have over heated the thing one too many times.

After a great debate with my self… I decided to replace the duel 20 charger with two single 6’s. I also elected not to mount them back in the engine room. I have them strategically canceled within the cockpit so the led’s can be easily monitored.

Since I don’t permanently slip, my Norcold is the biggest dc demand onboard. This is why I felt 6 amps was plenty… The few times I was slipped this year, I never seen either charger go higher than 2 amps.

on may on board chargers there is a fuse soldered on the circuit board. it is not serviceable from the outside. take off the housing and heat sink and lookfor a fuse. please let me know if this helps

My batteries are getting old and don't last over a week if I don't turn the charger on (ProMariner Dual 20 with LED's). However if I leave the charger on continuously it will boil the water out of the batteries. I called ProMariner (very nice and helpful) and they explained that the batteries were probably sulfated and not able to reach full charge so the charger just keeps trying to bring them up to voltage (about 14 fully charged, just like the engines alternator). Also, your batteries have to have about 3 volts for the chargers to initiate, in other words it won't start charging a dead battery. I substituted a different battery and the charger worked perfectly.

well, really, any charger is going to 'boil' the water from the batteries... if it isn't, its not getting to full voltage (and it's not boiling, it's electrolysis - splitting the water to hydrogen and oxygen... its the reason battery compatments ahve to be ventelated, or use sealed batteries). However, if the batteries haven't been well maintained - water levels checked (distilled only!), kept from deep discharge - they may actually be beyond recovery.

Personally, i don't agree with 'constant-on' chargers - I'd much rather let the batteries run at a slow discharge, and then weekly run the charger for 6 hours or so to top them up. This may have to happen more often if your always-on load is enough to bring them too far down in that week - but in this case, I'd recommend larger batteries, not more frequent charging.

Mike,
I found this fellows original post here. try giving him a call.

I had replaced mine about 3 months ago and I spoke directly with promariner. I also found that my charger was not charging and it turn out to be the the Amps. I went from a 30 amp 3 bank charger to a 40 amp 3 bank charger because I changed out my house batteries, which use to be a group 27 to a group 31. My led lights where on but the charger wasn't even warm to touch. Also, I bought my directly from them.
