I don't have time to further verify things till Monday evening but I heard the charger keeps turning on for a quick cycle - maybe 30 secs or so- every 5 mins or so. This is with shore power plugged in.

Is this normal? I keep the shore power plugged in since I took the boat home ~10 days ago. The marine mechanic told me to keep it plugged in all the time if possible.

Thanks

I don't know if 30 second cycles mean anything or not, but one explanation for the charger turning on, with the shore power plugged in, is if any DC only items run, then the charger should kick in, to bring battery levels back up.

I'll double check to see if anything's on but it keeps turning on after a couple of minutes. :/

I think it was just charging, when I turn the AC converter switch on. So I assume with the switch on, battery charger kicked in.

Next question is, does it have a overcharge sensor or something? So it'd know when to stop charging? If not, how long I should have it on for?

Thank you.

Hai Nhi, identify the brand, mod# of your charger. You can probably find the manual for it on line. A quick read will explain all functions and capabilities. Handy for future reference too.

If it's the original charger from Sea Ray, leave it on all the time - it's smarter than us... well, at least smarter than me.:smt001

But, like Woody said, look for the manual (for other onboard items as well). Originally from Sea Ray, there would have been a nice big package of manuals - not only for the boat, but for just about every individual component, as well.

There is a gauge on most of the chargers indicating amps and the gauge should go to zero as the batteries charge. If it is like mine the fan comes on and off and is the only thing you can hear when the charger is on.

Mines on 24/7. I'm in the engine room often(inspect before/after every use) and most the time it's not doing anything. I leave it on all winter also. Still on the original batteries...starting the eighth season now.
