batteries dead?

Just went out and looked at it again. Now it just clicks, motor doesn't try to turn at all. Both batteries read 13.7 volts. I disconnected the house battery to try to isolate it and same result. Pulled the starting battery to go get it tested.
The only thing I did different was last season I pulled the hoses and filled them with pink. In the past I had used a 5 gallon winterizing jug and started the engine to get the pink in the engine. Is there any way AF could have got into the cylinders by pouring it into the hoses? I'm leaning towards the starter being the issue though. I can't get in there to mess with the starter, can't fit.
Any other thoughts?

At 13.7, what do they read when you hold the key in the crank position?

Don't know yet. Need to get help to hit the key while I watch it. Tough one to troubleshoot by myself...lol

Batteries don't read 13.7V. Re-read post #5.

No... to your pink question.

Missed that post somehow. Step-son was putting new floors in his house so got to try to get him here to help out.

Alligator clips with a length of wire
Thought about that but can't get in there to get them on the solenoid. I could connect them directly to the battery but would that tell me whether it's the starter or a bad ground? I checked the ground on the back of the engine and that is tight and looks clean.

'May not tell you what you need to know if the engine or starter happens to be locked. Either of those will pull the battery pretty low, leading to a false conclusion that you have a bad battery. A load tester with a fixed, known draw on the battery is really the only way to know for sure.

The only way you'll know what is going on is to first measure with a Digital Volt Meter the battery voltage (directly on the battery posts) when attempting to crank then do the same on the starter motor solenoid with the negative DVM lead on the starter motor housing. If voltage stays at 11 volts or higher on the battery when attempting to crank then the battery is good to go. If voltage stays at 11 volts or higher at the starter solenoid when attempting to crank then the cabling is probably good to go and you've isolated to the solenoid or starter motor. If, on the other hand, the voltage significantly drops when cranking and measuring at the starter motor then there is something in the heavy battery cables or terminals that is causing the issue.

Tried again today and still just a click. I tapped on the starter with a hammer and tried again and got a very slight movement with the starter. Not quite 1/2 a revolution but more than I got before I tapped on it.

We got the starter off today. Wasn't too bad. He crawled down in there and had it off in maybe 1 hour. Tested it on the floor and it was hit or miss. If I tapped it it would spin then. But the starter I ordered was the wrong one. It's the normal size. The one on there is a mini starter.

Got the correct starter Thursday and put it on this morning. Fired right up. Got the oil changed. All ready to go.
