We have a 225 Sea Ray; two batteries. Just putting them back in for the new season. Is the cranking battery always the forward one and #1 on the shut off switch? Or does it vary from model to model; year to year? I cannot see the back of the shut off to trace the lines so hoping there is a standard configuration. Thanks.

Install 1 of the 2 and see which 1 it is on the switch and if it's the 1 doing the cranking.
Betting they both will crank the engine, but now you will know which switch position controls your deep cell battery

Yup. There is no standard to this. All depends on who installed it. As mentioned, just use a simple process of trial and error. Once you figure it out, take a black Sharpie and write the correct number (1 or 2) on the positive cable's protective boot.

Thanks gentlemen. Makes sense. Have a good boating season out there.

The forward batt is #1. The aft batt is #2. Doesn’t matter which one you use or dedicate. I typically switch to #2 for “house” and reserve #1 for cranking. Then while underway I switch to both.
