Baltimore bridge collapse

No bridge. They just end in the air. I was watching TV and they showed the two approaches from an angle that you couldn't see the wreckage in the water.

Oh from that road perspective. I would think everything is closed and blocked off by now.

The cost to do the guard rail protection on all bridges that have heavy traffic would probably be very expensive. The cause is not the boat it is the poor condition of the boat it seems. It is like aviation. All is fine with a defect until there is an accident. If a non US airline flies into the US it must conform to US standards I believe. Does anyone know what the requirements are for boats entering and leaving the US. If a CDN cruise is stopped by US CG they are inspected based on US rules.
It's called "Port State Control". Every nation can have a version since they exercise of vessels entering their waters. I believe the U.S version is known as being particularly exacting. Vessels are inspected to international as well as U.S. standards that are over and above the international. I believe they inspect every vessel on its first stop at a U.S. port then re-inspect randomly or mostly on a risk-based assessment of which ships to target. The owners can be fined or the vessel can even be detained and prevented from getting underway depending on the severity of a violation. But, there are only so many inspectors available so inspections only hit a small percentage of vessels that don't have a history of problems each year.

What he said. USCG Marine Safety Division does the ship checks. Lots of ships, few inspectors.

The Gordie Howe? Another bridge collapsed?
The Gordie Howe is new construction. Notice no pilings in the river.

Kudos to Anchor Bay East Marina for pitching in to help. Their Hard Yacht Cafe is a local favorite for tying up.

I have looked at the pictures of the bridge and can not tell if it is riveted or bolted. Does anyone know. When we took apart large steel structures and they were bolted we took them down by removing bolts. Cutting was only done when we could not get to the bolts.

Looks like bolts but they are trying to remove 200-300 tons at a time which may make cutting more effective.

Early 1960's rivits were replaced with alloy bolts.

This has to be an exciting job......seriously. I would guess there's many unforseen dangers in cutting these spans out.
Simple job for the welder and great money. The Corps of Engineers has 1,000 people on site engineering where to cut each piece. The underwater part will be more of a challenge due to visibility but these guys know what they are doing.

They are working around the clock so I would bet they will have the channel open by the end of the month.

They are saying by the end of May, but hope you're right.
Better to under promise and over deliver than over promise and under deliver...

The Army Corps of Engineers has said they are planning to open a limited channel (280 ft wide and 35 ft deep) by end of April, and to open a full-draft channel by the end of May.
