Are any of you that boat to the Bahamas doing things differently yet due to crime in the area?

Some of you take your boats to the Bahamas.

In addition to boating we also cruise. On the cruise related websites like Disboards and CruiseCritic there has been a lot of recent posting about how over the last two months Nassau has significantly become much more dangerous due to armed criminals.

There has been a history of pushy vendors, pick pockets, petty street crimes for years. Little things like if you go to the beach and sit on a lounger a person will charge you then an hour later a different person will stroll up and claim the lounger is theirs and demand payment.

Most of this goes unreported. It’s recently gotten a lot worse.

Last weekend armed bandits robbed an entire group of 18 people on a Disney cruise line tour, bound the tour guide, shot their weapons and caused terror.
Here is a recent rundown of some reported activities.

Sure hope that get a handle on it and fast. When they got their independence back in the 70's they almost killed the golden goose. They had what one of my Bahamian friend called "Black Man Day" and just so we don't have a race debate he was black. What he was referring to was the local thought it was all about them, and treated the white tourist like they were doing them a favor letting them come and spend their money there. Well it did not take the Bahamians to understand that the tourist/business people could and would spend their time and money elsewhere.

Nassau and Freeport and basically an extension of the United States, lets call it East East Florida or call it what you want. In my opinion, the real Bahamas are the out islands, Abacos, Bimini and the such. If want to go to a tourist trap location like Nassau or Freeport, I will stay here and hit Disney and go on "Pirate of the Caribbean". There has always been crime in those tourist areas and it is increasing , I would assume, due to the cruise ships. Just my opinion but a real Bahamas boat trip is to the out islands.

Chuck,
You got me hook, line and sinker.

It happens every now and then:thumbsup:

Having spent time with my extended family in the Bahamas when I was younger, I seem to remembering how they used to hammer you about guns aboard.

I've heard some nightmares about people and guns in the Bahamas. AS of yet I have had no problems and I declare my guns with serial numbers when I check in. Although the past few check ins the customs people have said you don't need these here they are more trouble than they are worth. It's gonna be tough to sell ME on that.

Wife and I went on a cruise last winter for the first time, stopped in Nassau due to bad weather. That place is a dump, we walked the market thats right there at the docks, harassed by all the peddlers. Little queer dude 2 or three cabins down from us was robbed for 18 dollars and a timex, at least his feelings were the only thing hurt. Another person we met had a tissue slipped into his pocket then was demanded to give him 20 bucks for what he was told was ganja. The locals really know how to pick out the sissies in the crowd and take them.

And the people there can't drive worth a sh!t, we had a delayed leave from that dump because someone was run over on a rental moped, heard he was life-flighted to Miami.

That place was almost as bad as Dominican Republic. I'm not sure I'd go cruising again come to think of it...

Little friend is in my avatar pic. Looks inocent enough but wait until he's not too drunk to mess you up!

The morale of the story is stay out of Nassau. The rest of the islands see very little crime...with one big exception. There is an epidemic of boat theft all over the islands. Basically if your boat is capable of running to Haiti or Cuba and back, it's a target. Big center consoles are especially desirable. Don't leave your boat unattended for any length of time. Otherwise, there is little to no violent crime outside Nassau.

I've been to Nassau a bunch of time on various cruises. While it does have some bad portions, you need to be smart about things. Walking around with your head down like some poor sap isn't one of them. The less you say, the better. Ignore people trying to sell you **** that you have no interest in. Hold your wife/children's hand at all times. Wear sunglasses.

The port itself sucks. If you're there, ask the cab driver to take you to the beach. The beach is beautiful and I wasn't harrassed at all, except to see if I was interested in renting a jetski or a beach chair. I said no thanks and kept walking. No issues.

Going to Nassau is no worse than going to Philadelphia, Chicago, or any big city for that matter. No offense, but people who come from small towns are the ones who are most surprised at these events that take place.
