Yesterday started out as a perfect boating day- temps in the high 80s to low 90s, 20% chance of thundershowers.
I like those odds - an 80% chance it won't rain:thumbsup:, and so I decided to apply the new name decals and have a proper christening ceremony.
I had some other chores to do first, and it was mid-afternoon as I prep'd the transom for the name.
While the Admiral gathered food & snacks, I applied the name & home port decals according to the vendor's instructions.
I had some minor difficulty getting the left side of the name to stick, but I re-applied the soapy water and squeegeed it again, and finally got it to stay.
The next thing I did proved to be the undoing of our outing.
We are "trailer sailors", so I started thinking about how I would christen the boat prior to actually launching it.
I correctly reasoned that a crowded ramp is no place to douse the pulpit while paying my respects to the sea gods, and I knew that delaying the ceremony until we were anchored somewhere would be tempting fate.
I'd cracked a cold beer while doing the job, and the solution hit me at once:
Now is the time for an "emergency ceremony".
While appealing to the proper deities for good fortune aboard "Sweet Equity", I slowly poured about 1/3 of my beer over the pulpit.
Sooooooo........ 15 minutes later, as I'm loading the boat with food & beverages, I felt the first raindrops.
The ominous crack of thunder came next, and within 5 minutes, it was monsoon time!
A quick check of weather radar showed that a large slow-moving storm front was coming through our area. By the time it would clear, it just wouldn't make sense to drive the 18 miles to the boat ramp, stay for an hour, then head home.:smt017
Anyway, here is picture of my effort, the smudges are raindrops on the camera lens.
I guess there's always next weekend....
