I have a 1995 330 Sundancer. The two batteries under the bench seat are new as of last year. the two batteries in the engine room are from 2017. I have two battery operated carbon monoxide detectors in the boat. The other day I came down and they were going off with high read outs (175). Nothing had been running. A dock friend said to add distilled water to my batteries. I added a half gallon to each engine room battery. reset my alarms and now they are reading around 50. Whats causing this? do i need new batteries? new charger? is my boat safe to be on with this going on? HELP!

Batteries will give off hydrogen gas and will set off CO detectors. May be a bad charger. Dock neighbor had the same situation. Installed a new smart charger and problem solved. If you added that much water, charger may be cooking them.

His CO detectors were going off?

Did you look up the signal that the co monitor was sounding?

Ones I have had have a signal specific for low power.

Are you sure you added 2 quarts to each battery? That's an AWFUL lot of water to be adding. I think it would be smart to charge them up fully and then load test them.

For the charger... go to ProMariner's website and look at their ProNautic series of chargers. If you get the same amperage as you currently have, it makes your job easy. You may be able to bump up the amps, but you have to look at your existing wire sizes (and lengths) - and/or change them if needed. Check out the installation manuals PM has - there's excellent info in there.
