Hello all, just back from my trip to the islands. Bimini to be exact. All went well, great planning is no substitute. The boat performed great. We crossed with a following sea! First time I've done/seen that. Usual is a head sea but the weather was sporadic at best. The seas were less than two feet and easy to run, took us two hours to cross from Miami to Bimini. To try to describe the water color is futile, one must see it for themselves. The weather was confused which is why we did not run to Grand Bahamas or the Abacos this year. In fact the trip was cut short because a tropical storm was brewing and we felt the best decision was an early return. The run back accross the gulf steam was a bit more nasty with the normal following sea running about 3-5ft and very choppy. The seas were confused with the swell running NW and the chop running N. made for an interesting run. Still made the run from Bimini to Lake Worth Inlet in 3 1/2 hours. That's 84 miles.
So the propellers I had Murphy's customize for me worked great. I think the standard props would have worked but I'll run with my custom props eveytime. Seems like the motor didn't have to work near as hard and gave me plenty of power in reserve. When I ran the inlet at Lake Worth they came in handy because of a big following sea made the inlet challenging but with the extra power it was a none issue.
So, we stayed at Blue Water marina and it's hard to beat $40.00 a night with electricity, plus they had a fresh water pool. Big Game Club is nice if I return I'll probably stay there. Bimini Bay down the channel is the new latest and greatest place but I'm sure one will have to pay well for it. The dive sites around Bimini seem nice but I think I'm spoiled by the Abacos. We did the concrete ship and Turtle Rocks, and Nine mile reef (the doughnut hole). The Bimini Tourist assoc. hosted a nice party for us visiting US guests for the fourth of July. Free drinks and snacks, and all tasted great, espically the ice cream. At the marina the offshore fishing bunch kept us all feed well with dolphin, yellow tail snapper, grouper, and venison. Yes deer! You never know what will come out of some of the fridges.
I did see two other 240 DA's there, so I'm not the only one. I'll work on some of the pictures I took, I'm just not very good at sizing them down. Thanks to all who helped me with knowledge for my prep. It made for a no event trip which I say is wonderful.

Mike,

Sound like you had a great time. Looking forward to seeing the pictures  How many boats went on the crossing with you?

Just three in my bunch, but we had a couple of boats catch up with us and ran with us till we sighted Bimini then it was a free for all on who gets in first. I cheated with my small boat and cut off the markers for a third place finish. I ran in the new channel cut while the larger boats ran down to the waypoint and up the beach. That's one reason for taking a small boat, accasibility.

Sounds like a great trip Mike. I bet the diving was great in the crystal clear water. Is the water clearer than the Keys? How was the tow to Florida in all of that traffic? We all are looking forward to the pictures.

Awesome!! Glad your boat performed well.

Thanks for sharing, it was great to hear, and please post the pictures :smt038

Mike..........glad to hear the trip went well. We are all looking forward to seeing your pictures.

BTW, if you are looking for an easy way to downsize your photos and link them to a posting here on CSR, use Photobucket.com. You can specify size as you download........and this is a free site as well.

Dave

Great pics Mike. Was that a Honda genny on your platform in the raft up pic?

Oh god... here comes the Honda Genny fight. Battlestations!

Obviously you had a great time in Bimini. Those were great pictures. If you ever need a second job you should be a sunset photographer. Thank you for taking your time to post your photos

Your pictures are great and it looks like you had a good time.

BTW Mike..........a couple of weeks ago a guy I saw a guy in an air boat on Lake Wylie. :wow:

Air boat on Lake Wylie? Go figure. I guess he was trying it out before he put it on the river below the dam.
Thanks Paul, I do like to take pictures of sunsets and sunrises. For me that's a big reason for me to go to the islands. It's so relaxing to watch the sun appear or fade away. I get caught up in the moment, espically when it's so beautiful. You should see the Abacos, hopefully I'll buy an underwater camera for next year. :smt038 Mike

Thanks for the great report and pics Mike. Ever since our trip to Charleston when you talked about going across I've not been able to get it out of my mind. Someday.....

Hey GJ you know your boat is capable of making the trip in good weather. You'll have to trust that new motor though. like you said, someday.
I'm not sure how or when, but I'd like to rendezvous on lake keowee also. I seem to remember something about the Tiki hut or shack or????? Lake Keowee is one beautiful lake. Later.

Hey Mike, thanks for nice post and cool pitures. That's some nice trip I wish totake some day.

Alex.
