first boat with an auto pilot and loving it, except it stopped working yesterday, message is Drive Stopped, I have hydraulic steering, The only reference I find in the manual is to check the Rudder Reference? can someone point me to where the items are located for this system, I see the rudder reference unit attached to the rudders, any tips on how to trouble shoot, any help would be appreciated.

There is a separate error message for rudder reference so I think that's not a productive troubleshooting path. Drive Stopped usually means the autopilot pump is either not getting power or the pump has failed. There is a connection for the pump at the course computer which is probably mounted under/near the dash. The connection is marked "motor" and you can check that connection as a first pass. If that's sound and you can check for voltage at that connection point when the autopilot is engaged you can verify the course computer is sending signals to the pump.

The autopilot pump should be mounted back aft very close to the steering ram. When you find it, try giving the pump a whack. That may free up a frozen pump shaft and will indicate you need to get the brushes replaced which is the most likely reason for the problem. That may allow it to work for a while but you will need to take/send the pump to a Raymarine service center for a rebuild.

Or cut the two wires from the pump and put 12v to it. If you hear the pump run, you can continue your troubleshooting. Pumps have been my failures in the past.
Good Luck

I have power to the pump, tried tapping it with no luck, I'll need to have it rebuilt.
Is it recommended to send it to raymarine or can a hyd motor shop rebuild it?
can I use the boat with the hyd lines disconnected from the pump?

Most Raymarine stuff needs to go back to the company but I would think you might be able to find a shop that would be able to fix the pump. It's worth a try because Raymarine's repair rates are pretty steep; I believe they have a price list on the Raymarine site. If a local motor shop won't touch it then you would need to go that route. I would think you are OK to operate as long as you have blocked off the hydraulic lines.

I would get a new pump....I just put in Octupus pump. Less than $500. Don't disconnect anything until you have a new pump in hand. You will need some fluid to be added at the helm...telestar.

[44313] Octopus Autopilot Pump Type 1 Adjustable Reversing Pump w/Shut-Off Valve - 12V up to 18ci Cylinder @ $463.82
Easy job to replace. Good luck.
