Is it possible and how much effort is associated with installing an automatic anchor? Also, I have a 1981 245 DA... any suggestions on the anchor I should buy?

If you asking about an anchor windlass (anchor winch) I just went through what you are asking. The total cost would have been about 1000.00, if I did the installation. In the end, I just installed the bow roller part, which you can see in the link in my signature. The hassle of running the heavy 6 ga. wiring from the anchor locker to the batteries, was a little more work than I wanted to do this season. Now that I have the roller, if I decide to install the windlass next season, I'll have that much less work to do. I found the the bottom of the line Lemar would do the job, and it should work on your's also. Remember, the windlass is for retrieving the anchor, not to press a button and expect the windlass to do all the work. Over-using like that will shorten it's life, from what I have heard. You basically use the boat's engine to do most of the work, bring the boat over the anchor to dislodge. Also, you need an anchor locker deep enough so the line doesn't tangle as it drops. I think 18" is recommended for the Lemar. That's from the top of the pile of line to the bottom of the windless....

Here's a link to the Lewmar prices: http://www.google.com/products/cata...=jPTHTZibAeXn0QHipqyYCA&sqi=2&ved=0CGAQ8wIwAQ#

Lot of work and money for a 24. No offense to the boat size. I was able to hand over hand my Regal with no problem.

I don't know if you could retro a light weight windlass to get the job done. If so, then it may be worth it.
