I'm not much of a mechanic so I wanted to post this to see what your thoughts are before I question the service manager. My Raymarine auto pilot ST6001 quit working and I took the boat to Marine Max. The computer quit working and was sent to Ray Marine for repairs. Marine Max stated the flux compass and computer box were mounted poorly and in a bad place. It was in the compartment behind the cup holder next to the Captains chair on the deck of my 340 Sundancer. This was on August 19th.

They did not receive the computer back from Raymarine until the boat was hauled out for winter storage on Oct 20th. I just received the invoice and was charged 5 hours ($500) to remove the fluxgate compus and computer and 6 1/2 hours ($643) to "relocate the compass and fabricate a box to mount the computer". They relocated it in the cabinet in the aft cabin, approximately three feet from the original mount. The boat was stored within a mile of Marine Max so I think their labor time included travel.

They also put in their comments that "it may be necessary to take the boat for a test run to confirm the auto pilot operation and repairs. If so, additional time may be needed." I'm guessing this means they will charge more money to determine if the computer was fixed or not.

My question would be, do you think 11 1/2 hours labor to locate, determine the problem, dismount and install the devise is fair. The actual cost of repair ($231) was very reasonable.

It's not that big of deal, especially if it's working now. I just don't want to be taken advantage of.
Thanks for your input!

My autpilot quit working, right after I put my toolbox full of metal tools next to it.

I moved the toolbox and the problem was solved. Any chance you had ferrous metals within 18" or the fluxgate?

In any event, sounds like too much for the nature of the work.
