You have no choice........you have to find and remove the impeller blades that broke off. Follow the output hose from the water pump and see where it goes next. YOu don't say what kind of generator you have, but the heat exchanger is usually the next component in the system. Take the end cap off the heat exchanger on the inlet end and you will probably find the missing blades there since the cooling tubes are too small for it to pass. Be watchful of the gaskets/o-rings because you will have to reuse them if you don't have a spare cap and gaskets on hand.

Good luck with it.

I was able to flush the impeller pieces out of the exchanger by removing the inlet and outlet hoses then running a hose to the outlet. Took about 15 seconds to get all the fragments I was missing. Just hope they didn't get further into the system.

Tks for your reply.
I decided to pull the impeller w/ housing out and the water pump shaft is in the same exact position it was before.
Bumped the gen starter a couple of times, shaft is stuck.

It looks like a new water pump is in order.
Luckily my mechanic will be replacing the water pump on my friend's Meridian on Tuesday, so I told him to come do mine as well. My boat will stay at my friends house on the water.

Well, no A/C for me tomorrow! :(

There is a plastic coupler that connects the genset's main shaft to the water pump shaft. There are 2 bolts that hold the big round plate on the back of the generator end. Remove that you and you will likely see the broken plastic coupler. Mine was yellow. I don't remember the part being very expensive and it easy to change (if you have good access). Mine broke on a trip one year and I used a few wire ties to hold the coupler together and reinstalled it. That worked for 20 hours our so before I got the new part. Get 2, one for a space.

Thanks!
So you're saying unbolt the round plate (2 hex screws, one at the top, on at the bottom) and pry the cover off, replace the coupler and problem solved?
Uhm...that sounds easy enough. I just gotta find me a parts manual for my genset (2002 Kohler 5E) and locate that coupler.

BTW - is it just me or the cover plate for the impeller does not some out completely (bolts too long) unless you pull the pump out>

Thanks again for your help!

Agreed on intem # 20. As I understand it, that coupling is a sacrifical part to protect the pump if something should jam in it.

Thanks for the heads up.
I'm going to order 2 of these, along with some maintenance parts to do my oil change and service on it.
