This is serious business. No matter what the outcome, its pretty darn hard to beat mother nature. It's probably just a matter of time before we have carp jumping at us when we water ski :smt009

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm is pushing for legal action to prevent Asian carp from invading the Great Lakes -- including shutting down the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

Granholm and Lt. Gov. John Cherry sent Michigan's attorney general, Mike Cox, a letter today urging him to "pursue every legal tool" available.

They say among possible actions are closing the ship canal, part of a waterway linking Lake Michigan with the Mississippi River. Illinois officials plan to dump a toxin in the canal tonight to kill off the dreaded carp, which could endanger the Great Lakes' fishing industry.

A Granholm spokeswoman says Michigan could file lawsuits against the state of Illinois and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It also could try to prevent southern fish farms that use Asian carp from importing more of them.

Five environmental groups also have sent Cox a letter with similar requests.

There needs to be a ban on any thing live from any other country being put in to the environment. The EPA is all over everything except this kind of crap and those dam Asian lady bugs I hate them. :smt013

Safer to use TNT

I saw it on the news last night. Apparently they are shutting down the electric grid for maintenance so they are poisoning in the interim. I know the river was shutdown at Lockport a few months ago by the Corp to replace/maintain the system. Boats on Lake Michigan could not get to winter storage in Seneca and other places and vice versa for boats that wanted to get out to Lake Michigan down river from the lock.

I was hoping to make a trip out to Lake Michigan later next season but if they shut down both the Sanitary and Ship Canal along with the Calumet Sag Canal, I have to send you guys post cards instead of bringing some adult beverages.!:smt013

Have no fear.
If you are bringing the adult beverages leave your boat down on the river and follow me to Hammond.
Plenty of room on 'Dancing'

In fact I think I saw a recent post that you are in Darien.
I am around the corner in Clarendon Hills.
Carpooling is not out of the question.
Saves on car fuel so we can afford boat fuel!

Although I don't think they will ever be able to close the locks down.
Too much commercial traffic I would think.

Dan

What about neting the carp and sending them to under developed Countries?

Yep,
I saw you were a neighbor the first time I logged onto the forum. If you bring adult beverages along I'll reciprocate by car pooling down to Harborside Marina 3 miles west of I55.

Asian Carp update: Fox News reported this afternoon that the "strategic" poisoning killed only fish besides the Asian Carp. I think JV II's dynamite suggestion would be more effective or maybe they should get a PT boat with depth charge launchers to finish the job.

I thought at first you were joking about them wanting to close off the locks.
But I read in the Trib today it is a possibility.
I'm not sure where they would close them at though.
Lockport or Dresden Lock?

Anyway we can go out on the big lake one weekend and down on the river another if you like.
Very familiar with Harborside Marina.
When I had 'Dancing' shipped up here I stayed there for about 3 weeks prepping boat for trip up to Hammond.

Always up for an adult beverage.
Neutral Zone, Country House (walking distance), DJ's Sports Bar etc, can usually find me around one of these places.

Dan

You can always try this may be with adult beverages.

Those guys are really nuts!!

Read an article last year about one of them down on the Illinois River that has a guide service and he branched out into the Asian Carp Bow Hunting Guide Service and makes a pretty good living off of it in the off season.

Something does have to be done though.
It could really hurt the Great Lakes Sports Fishing Industry.

Dan

I'd be more concerned with it throwing off the underwater ecosystem. Something needs to be done ASAP.

We are facing the same sort of issues here on Lake Guntersville, Tennessee River.

*The Bass fishing "industry" need the underwater vegetation that we as boaters hate.
*The Carp will eat the vegetation but not near fast enough. They eat Bass babys too.
*The bow hunters love harvesting 40 pound carp.
*The Corps (under presure from the Bass people) have stopped chemical spraying of the vegetation.
*Now my marina plans to charge us extra to keep the Millfoil out of the runways.

Its a political mess!
