Our marina recently replaced our AC unit and removed the factory installed sea scoop stating it was more of a problem than a help and if any thing got sucked up it would go in strainer. However, I spoke with Dometic and they highly recommend a speed scoop and a strainer.

I was wondering what anybody else experienced. should scoop be reinstalled?

Yes. First if you have a genset and run the ac underway the ac won't function. A non scoop pickup will actually work as a suction device and pull the water out of the cooling circuit. For this reason, even if you never run the ac underway it will suck the cooling dry, and we all know what fun it is get the ac water pump re primed.
