A friend is looking at an 89 440 convertible with Cat 3208s. The boat name is Pachenga. It is at a broker in Alameda but spent last 10 years in Rio Vista, looks very clean 1500 hrs on the engines. He is looking for a livaboard boat and this one looks pretty suitable for that. Any feed back would be great.

Sounds familiar. I may have seen it out and about on the Delta. If it has moved to Alameda then it has gone to salt. That's a lot of hours for a boat that has seen salt, even for a diesel. Prolly fine as a live-aboard though if the price is right.

The valve-train and the after coolers should be inspected closely at survey.

I have a friend in Port St. Joe Florida that lost a 43CV (predecessor to the 44 CV) in hurricane Michael. He ran charters on the boat for 20+ years and she had 16,000 hours on her Cat 3208's when she sank.

In that 16,000 hours he put a few alternators on the engines, one fuel pump, and a few injectors. Everything else he did was just normal maintenance. ........and the owner never had to cancel a single charter due to a mechanical problem in the time I have known him.

Every minute of the time on that boat was is salt water.

The 44CV is a big, heavy, tough boat, that is slow by today's standards. They tend to be a bit wet in head or quartering seas on the bow, they are stern heavy and run a bit bow high, but the 3208's are very nearly bullet proof.

A good choice.........
