Anyone have slips at 2 marinas?
I am considering a second slip about 35-40 miles away from my current slip so I can spend more time there and explore other areas of the delta without having to cruise all the way back home each trip.
Looking for pros and cons from people whom have done this

Do any of these marinas in this second area have visitor slip rentals available?
They offer an outside tie for guest / short term (less than a year) and I am not a fan of outside tie's on the river since no one knows what a "No Wake Zone" is and I would prefer a covered slip which they make you sign for a full year.

An acquaintance of mine has 2 slips in Lake Erie. His rationale is that he uses the boat to go to Put-In-Bay most weekends, and transient reservations can be challenging, so he wanted to have a "home slip" there as well as his home marina.

From where you are at, you might have a slight advantage in choosing which county the boat's home port will be. I'm guessing that S.F. and Marin County taxes are higher than Sacramento or San Juaquin for example. After spending a month every weekend at Willow Berm Marina last summer, and seeing what their covered slip rates are, I think it is a great idea. My boat that spent so much of it's life on the Delta is now in the salt and I almost pay double the rate charged up in the Delta for an uncovered slip. I guess the only question is will you have to sign a one year lease, or can you just go month to month? If it can be month to month, It's a no brainer.

It be an easy financial desicion. Add up the cost of fuel running back and forth vs cost of slip, and see which is cheaper. Might consider the lifestyle factor of not spending the time running back and forth as well

Willow berm is where I want to get a 2nd slip but unless I sign for a year I can’t get a covered slip. What I really wanted to do is spend 6 months in Sacramento and 6 months at Willow berm and in Sacramento if I don’t sign for June 1 thru May31 I am pushed to an outside tie.

Between time lost cruising back and forth that could be used cruising elsewhere and the approx 70-75 NM round trip at about 1 mpg it does make it a lot easier to justify financially
Thanks

The Amway boys and girls have slips all over Lake Michigan in the best ports. Makes for convenient boating when they are in the area. I’ve used their slip in Harbor Springs on occasion. It’s very nice.

Not to mention the hours/wear and tear on all systems while cruising port to port.
But,... sometimes, the destination is not what's most important.

First season with 2 slips but we are able to rent one out when we are not using it. The second slip puts us closer to where we love to boat but it’s 1 hour from home. Worthwhile trade off in my opinion. Don’t think I’ll ever give up the slip closer to home but I may reconsider renting next season only because I didn’t like the rush to vacate for the renter. It’s nice having the boat close to home specially at the start of the season to get the winter gremlins sorted out. Only down side i see now is that I have nothing but house and yard work to do now during the week since the boat is further away. It also makes fixing things a bit more difficult but with planning I think it works out. The upside is a simple trips to the boat seems like a mini vacation. Also being 20-30 mins from great destinations is the icing on the cake. Being able to leave work and head to destinations that we normally take a weeks vacation is priceless and the fuel savings goes without saying.

Your scenario is almost exactly what we have going although the 1st slip will not let us rent out when not there. The 2nd slip is 1 hour 10 minutes from home vs 25-30 minutes, but everywhere I want to go and be is closer to the 2nd slip.

And so does VA. ...
Depends in VA...in the county where I keep my boat, they don't tax "toys" unless it starts with a huge number. Seriously, it's like $50 Million. They have recognized that toys can leave. We fought a "boat tax" proposal right before Covid after Democrats took control over the County Council. We came out in force, and they saw the short-sightedness of their proposal.

We got a second slip a few years back in Lake Erie our home slip was in St Clair. After just one trip we never went back to the home slip....so be careful of that you might like the new slip better :)
