Anyone have/make a liquor bottle rack?

Looking to "class up" the 1994 290DA cabin...or at least fill an open spot. I have a 8" tall, 25" wide, 10-12" deep shelf area above the microwave with an oval window + curtain that does nothing but collect crap. I'd like to put a mini liquor rack in there, putting in the smaller liquor bottles (under 8" obviously).

I'm thinking a couple of pieces of 1/2" oak, 25" x 10", parallel to each other separated on the corners by vertical dowels (maybe 1 - 1.5" high). Top flat piece would have holes routed in it to fit the bottles.

Has anyone done this or seen anything similar? My concern is not only looks, but stability - I'd hate to have bottles bouncing around during the drive, but also don't want it to be a pain to try to get them out.

I've seen similar, except made from plexiglass...rout holes in both the top and bottom and raise the bottom about 1/2" above the shelf, and the top about 4" above that. Assemble inside a closed cabinet if need be.

In my sailing days the liquor locker wasn't opened until the sun went below the yardarm. Lacking a yardarm, we settled for the boom. Now with a Sea Ray I am faced with the conundrum of what to use in place of the boom.

If I understand your description, you are basically looking for an expanded 'cup holder'. My concern would be that that the height to the top would be high enough to keep things from falling out when you are moving.

The space on top of the microwave is pretty wasted, but there is also a porthole (at least on our 280). I think you might not like the light blockage.

Just a thought:

How 'bout making the rack so the bottles lay on their side with the cap-end facing out? Sort of like a wine rack. You could make the rack so the cap-end of the bottle is higher than the bottom-end of the bottle. That should keep them from sliding out. If you make a deep enough inset in the rack, that would keep them from sliding sideways.

Oooh - if you made the front rack out of some nice wood, you could engrave labels into it with a nice script lettering - "Bombay", etc.

I had a teak wine /paper towel holder made for me by a guy I found on e-bay.
Also had a magazine holder made.
Fantastic work.
Price was at least 75% less than stuff I saw a West Marine and was done to my sepcifications.
I will find his name and e-bay store for you this weekend.

Dan

It is above the stove in the galley
I will get a better picture this weekend also.

I believe I have to replan - because of the height (around 8"), having a 7-8" tall bottle in there means it has to tilt far to one side to remove from any type of rack that will hold the bottles upright. Catch 22 - make the rack low to allow bottles to be removed, and run the risk of them tipping over and falling out while running. Make it high enough to prevent falling, and you can't pull them out. Can't settle for hotel fridge-sized bottles, and a side-laying rack probably won't be able to keep the bottles in either...any suggestions?

I think the side-laying can work - make the cut-out deep enough to keep the bottles from sliding left to right. But, You're probably right, it might need something to hold them down a bit. I don't think they're going to actually pop up and out, but they would certainly rattle.

Some 1/4" foam tape would help the rattle - applied just where the bottle contacts the rack. Would still maybe need some type of "thing" that lays over top of the bottles to keep them secure. A bungee cord would be functional, but not aesthetically pleasing.

Hmmm... maybe some type of guillotine set-up?

You might want to consider drinking it faster. Then you won't have to worry so much about storing it.

My 390 had a nice one already built in. Lower shelf is separated by a few inches from an upper shelf that has round holes cut for the bottles to sit in, keeps them in place. SR even installed a mirrored back and an upper rack to hold glasses. I added some blue led lighting and voila:

I have been considering a 2-3 bottle unit on the inside of the cabinet door under my sink. (not sure what your layout is) The door latches positively and the rack could be made deep enough vertically so that it would next to impossible for a bottle to fly out.

Cheers,

We use the space beneath the step to the cabin door. It has a piece of wood laying in it above the bildge and shower sump pump - not something i need to access all the time. Now if I could only convince the Admiral to keep the bottles upright in that cabinet. I picked up the boat last night and checking the 'suplies', noticed that the bilge and sump pump now smell like coconut.... the rum has evaporated. Good thing I checked the 'supplies'! This way I at least got to replace what got spilled. ((~; (will still need to rinse the bilge, however, as the residue is a bit sticky. )~; But what the heck. At least, if something breaks or spills in this cabinet, it's not really going to mess up anything.

We had a custom "bar pockets" made as we did not have anywhere to sit or store various size "whatever" bottles in our '98 290 SR. It does a great job and we haven't lost a bottle yet. It cannot be used on that shelf tho. I will post a pic after I get home from work today.

Here is a link to the guy that made some stuff for me.

My wine rack is the 9th one down and I think my magazine rack is the 6th one.

Great workmanship and pricing.
He can make just about anything you need to your specs.
After he make a 'one-of' for some one he just makes a few more and post them up on
e-bay.

Good Luck
Dan
