The 1989 390 I just purchased has a waste treatment system on it called a San X one. The Model #SX12T. It appears that a treatment chemical has to be added to tank after it is full then it gets pumped out. I have never seen one of these and am having a hard time finding any information on them other than the owners manual that I have.

I am curious how well they work? Are there any odor issues with the treatment chemical? How convenient is it to use? How efficient is it? Holding tank appears small. Does it have to be pumped out frequently?

I have no info other than the manual. Just curious how well they work.

I have one on my 390. The chemical comes in gallon jugs and sits back on the SanX unit and is added automatically very time you manually start a treatment cycle. It uses a quart each time so one gallon is 4 treatment cycles. You only have to do a treatment cycle when the holding tank is full so its not very often. The unit is on the port side in the rear. If you climb down in the rear engine room access hole, facing forward, the unit is directly on your left. Should be a gallon jug of blue liquid sitting in a holder. The replacement chemical is easy to find on the web and is about $35 a gallonThe controls are on the wall to your left when you are going down the steps into the cabin are are simply "treat and discharge" or "treat and hold". Unit has to be turned on in the electrical panel.

Since this discharges above the water line are there any odor issues? I had heard that the treatment chemical was formaldahyde based.

I am thinking of switching to purasan simply because I know more about it and how well they work. We are constantly in tie ups for a good 7hrs a day. I am concerned with having to pump this out while tied up with people swimming around my boat.

There should be no odor at all until you discharge out and even then it's not bad at all. You are not supposed to discharge in an inland lake so it shouldn't be a problem during raft ups. Now what you do with this fully treated waste when you're running alone at cruise speed is your business. Like Las Vegas.

[h=1]No Discharge Zones (NDZs)[/h]The Clean Water Act (CWA) is the centerpiece of Federal legislation addressing pollution in U.S. waters. Under section 312 of the CWA, vessel sewage may be controlled through the establishment of areas in which discharges of sewage from vessels are not allowed. These areas are also known as "no discharge zones."
[h=3]What is a no discharge zone for vessel sewage?[/h]A no discharge zone (NDZ) is an area in which both treated and untreated sewage discharges from vessels are prohibited. Within NDZ boundaries, vessel operators are required to retain their sewage discharges onboard for disposal at sea (beyond three miles from shore) or onshore at a pump-out facility.

Thank you. I am familiar with the Clean Water Act.

When you're doing a search on the Internet use "sealand sanx/tdx" as the key words and up comes all information on the unit. The blue liquid has formaldehyde and is known carcinogen. I see it selling for $21.00 to $39.00 per gallon and does not include shipping.
I don't see it being manufactured anymore. I just switched to the “Raritan Purasan”, because the TDX cost way too much to operate and may not be allowed much longer.
