Anyone ever see a MY???

There's a 380 Aft Cabin in the same marina where I have Just Ducky. Next time you go past, take a look over. It's right on the end of the T.

frank, i have noticed the 380AC many times. but i dont think the fellas above were trashing ACs - no one seems to like MYs. MY= aerodynamic AC (?)

I thought most people consider the aft cabin layout a motor yacht. As Frank W said, they have the aft deck about 10 or more feet above the waterline with a stateroom below that deck.

Best regards,
Frank C

SR makes the distinction - for example, there is a 390MY(the tennis shoe)

and a 420AC, which is more boxy.

another melted boat.

:lol::lol:

....- no one seems to like MYs.....

Not so fast....I know that I'm in minority, but I have to admit it....I don't hate them. They are not my first choice when it comes to a bridge boat, but may be my only choice.... according the admiral that is.

I like the "High White Cons" analogy......that would make a great name for one.

BTW....any MY owners on CSR?

i dont think they're all that bad - i'm basically indifferent. i was just curious b/c i've never seen one chugging around the bay. if it werent for the brokerage pages of boat mags, i'd never even know they exist.

handling one of these has got to be a real bitch, esp with gas. they are probably SAILS. i know my boat is and i've got an awful lot less surface area.

The MY's remind me of Bayliners with their sloping bow and sloping interior windows.

L&G,

We have a 420AC and love all the room. The back deck works great and while we were in Florida it was terrific this past winter spending 7-10 days on the boat. Not many smaller boats are that enjoyable for much more than a long week end. Now that we've moved the boat up to the Chesapeake Bay area we certainly wish we had the full hard top and full AC system since it's been so hot this summer. Before you trash them you might find your self in one later in life when comfort & more room is of interest. With 420HP Cats cursing around 22 knots isn't so bad either. I never thought I'd own a Gezer Pleaser (Pontoon Boat) but things change. Enjoy what ya got and dream about what ya want.

They are very popular on the upper Mississippi and St Croix rivers. I see them everywhere.

they are!! :smt013

Girlfriend and Heritage above are ACs (for AFT CABIN)

below you see a MY (for MOTOR YACHT)

Big difference.

Both of these are SEARAY designations (like DB is sedan bridge, DA is sundancer, EC is express cruiser, etc.) this will be on the final exam so i suggest you all study and memorize it!

I know they are different, I was confused because the title was 'anyone ever see an MY' not 'anyone ever see an AC'. You see my point?

dont mind my :smt013. it seems that many arent clear that ACs and MYs are vastly different in design and style, both inside and out. i see aft cabins around here ALL the time. 380s & 370s (of all different vintages) and a buddy has a 420.

I see a the My all over the place down here on the FL Gulf coast. There's a lady with one in the slip behind mine (a new 40' - 2007).

She took it from Tampa Bay to Bimini in June and reported a $9,000 fuel bill. She also reported a failed transmission on her approach to the inlet at Bimini. When she returned from this trip she had a salt water leak amidship at the hull joint, both port and starboard and then the other transmission failed.

Further discussion revealed that she ran in 6' to 7' seas with a few 9' in the mix for several hours. Apparently this was during crossing the stream with a northerly component to the wind. She also revealed that she was running at 98% of her engine capacity just to keep up with the group.

My uninformed conclusion is that there is no way a 40' MY is designed to run in seas like that (hull joint failure!?) and that running her engines that hard to make the MY climb the swells and waves is likely what did her transmissions in.

I've run from Key West to Marco Island in 6' to 7' seas in my boat. While it was a rough ride, I felt confident that my old DB was rock solid. That MY looks too top heavy and I'm sure they heard some unexplainable noises on that trip.

That's my $0.02

We seriously considered an aft cabin / motor yacht layout when we bought the DB. Considering that we boat in the "unmanly" (i.e. pleasant) part of the Chesapeake Bay, the well earned reputation as not very seakindly was not that much of an issue. Also, we do use the boat as a floating condo (in that we use it every weekend much the way some people might use a condo at the beach) so the room was really appealing.

But, we do tend to take our floating condo away from the dock every weekend, and I just couldn't see jumping in the MY/AC and running over to Ego Alley, Cantler's or St. Michaels for the day. The tougher close quarters handling and lower speeds were a problem. Also, given the time we spend swimming and gunkholing, being 10 feet off the water was also a problem.

As always... it's all about tradeoffs.

But to answer the original question.... we see some AC's up here, but not that many. I saw one last weekend at HMI Aquapalooza on Saturday, and I smoked one (could've been the same one) headed up the Bay on Sunday.

My wife and I spent a weekend on a friends 39 MY. Conclusion: We call it "The Shoe" as in tennis shoe, like a high top Nike. And then there was "the steps". Now we are not young, but the up,down,up,down steps thing drove us crazy. Nothing like a 410 Express. I invited my buddy over to my bilge to sit between the Cummins whenever he needed a little space!
