I'm feeling somewhat of a "big baby" here as a couple of the guys who have experienced hernias were able to work right up until the day of their surgeries. In hind sight this has been coming on for a few months now but lately it's been getting really hard to get around and darn near impossible to work, spending the best part of the day trying to stuff intestines back into the abdominal cavity. Am I turning into a "big woose"?

No, your not a big wuss. Anyone man enough to stuff intestines back in place is OK by me. Sorry for your troubles. I've known a couple guys who had hernia surgery. It took them a long time to recover back to normal but were pleased with their outcome. I'm sure you will be OK too.

When I was on a canoe trip in HS a guy on another boat paddled his way into a hernia. He was in extreme pain and in the middle of knowwhere and we had to carry him 1/2 mile to the road. Later I heard both his testicles ascended into his abdomen. No wonder he was screaming so loud.

I have felt your pain and could not find a comfortable place in the house(standing, sitting or laying down). Had the laparoscopic procedure done and was back on my feet and resumed most regular activities in 2 days. Felt way better the next day after surgery. Don't wait! After a week or two you'll be back to normal and will have forgotten you ever had the hernia. I was lucky and had surgery the next day after going to Dr. about it. A friend of mine went to a Dr. that was from the old school recently and went under the knife(old technique) and was laid up for a couple of weeks post surgery. Find someone younger that is trained in the latest and greatest techniques. Good luck and get to the doctor right away if you haven't already.

By the way, my wife read on the internet that athletic "compression shorts" may help and went to the local sports store and bought me a pair. It really did help make the pain more tolerable, especially when riding in the car. You might give it a try.

I had the laparoscopic procedure done as well and was back on my feet and resumed most regular activities in 2 - 3 days. As the doctor said I might feel a tug once in a while were he did the repair, which I do if I lift something heavy. Get it done, it can become a dangerous condition.

Hey Chris...you're not a wuss. Just a guy! After 12 knee surgeries in my life, I feel I've earned the title complete with my pic beside the word in the dictionary. Just do whatever feels right for you...we're all different.

surgery isn't bad, recovery not to bad just take it easy a couple of days the worst part IMO is the hair growing back in .It is like having a a cactus in your pants.

Same here; had the lap surgery done last October (wanted to make sure boating was done...). I had never been anesthetized before so I was even worried about that. I was getting too nervous and just had to get it over with. Surgery was about 90 minutes in duration and the doc told me it was "bigger" than he expected when he patched it. I was walking later that day to the end of the driveway and back. In a few days I was back to almost normal and back to my desk job and still doing plenty of walking. In a few weeks, I never felt it again and was able to run and go to the gym. Don't go to the websites that talk about this; it won't help but you can see from me and the others; we didn't have any problems! Best of luck to you! My only advice; don't sit around try to move as much as you can within reason.

Are you reading my mind? I just had the surgery on Tuesday. A bit of pain, but not too bad.
Get it fixed.

Recovering in the hospital now from a double hernia. Get it fixed.

Speedy recovery to you. I'm guessing it'll be a few weeks before you'll even be able to walk normally eh?

"Normally" possibly but I went to the Shouldice Hospital in Toronto. They are one of the best in the world. They do 7000 hernia repairs a year. I literally stepped off the operating table albeit into a wheelchair but still impressive. I was walking 4 hours later even after my second surgery in 3 days.

If anyone needs a hernia repair don't waste your time with the mesh repair. These guys to a proper repair with stainless steel thread sewn.
